Christmas in Washington: ice skating, Santa Claus, brunch and lunch

Winter has arrived with brisk air, sunshine and an occasional snowflake. What better time to enjoy the skating rink at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden (202) 216-9397). The skating rink is now open and continues until mid-March, 2010, weather permitting. What fun to view the Gallery's works of art as you breeze along the ice listening to music from the sound-system. The winter hours for the sculpture garden are Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

If it gets too cold, mulled cider, hot cocoa, coffee and expresso are available for purchase at the Pavilion Café (202/289-3360) in the Sculpture Garden, as well as pizzas, sandwiches, salads and desserts.

Santa Claus is coming to town, at least to Alexandria for brunch at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City (703/412-2760). On Sunday, December 20, Santa and Mrs. Claus will make an appearance along with carolers, elves, reindeer and a musician at a festive holiday brunch. Reservations are available from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Prices are $80 for adults and $35 for children, all-inclusive.

There's still time to attend the Teddy Bear Tea tomorrow, Sunday, December 13 when Teddy Bear will make a special appearance at tea with a storyteller and musician, starting at 11 a.m. at the Ritz-Carlton. The cost of attending the Teddy Bear Tea is $49 per person.

Making lunch a special occasion during the festive month of December is something Chef Kaz Okochi knows how to do at his restaurant KAZ Sushi Bistro (915 I St. NW, 202/530-5500). His Cup Sushi lunch features three cups of sushi or a sizzling hot pot accompanied with steamed rice.

The Cup Sushi lunch is served in miniature bowls; diners can select up to three toppings in their bowls. The hot pots are miso with pork, daikon, carrots, sweet potatoes and scallions, or with chicken, tofu, mushrooms, spinach and glass noodles. Each is priced at $12.

The special holiday lunch options re available throughout the month of December and served Monday to Friday from 11:20 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Washington sure does sound like a fun town at this time of year; Teddy Bear Teas, skating at National Gallery of Art and sushi. That's my kind of place.
