Staying clean and green--MSC Cruises excels with "eco-friendly" technology

MSC Cruises has incorporated the latest and best systems for protecting the environment into the MSC Splendida which set sail on its inaugural cruise this past July. Like her sister ship MSC Fantasia, the Splendida effectively utilizes “green” technology to ensure that she preserves the beauty of the sea and the air wherever she sails.

The ship's "eco friendly" features include:
A five-stage Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) plant processes all wastewater produced onboard. Although the effluent produced by this system is so pure that it could be discharged into the ocean without harming the ecosystem, it is stored onboard for later transfer to land-based waste systems in port.

Innovative monitoring systems in staterooms and public areas provide a 25 percent reduction in onboard energy use. For example, the system can detect an open stateroom window or balcony door, adjusting the room temperature and setting the climate control system accordingly.

Special high-efficiency incinerators handle paper and cardboard waste disposal while compacting machines and grinders sort and prepare aluminium and glass for recycling in port.

The Splendida's environmental safeguard match those of its sister ship, Fantasia,  which recently became the first passenger vessel to receive the prestigious ‘6 Golden Pearls’ in honor of its being one of the greenest ships in the world. The Splendida is currently awaiting certification for this classification, which also includes meeting the highest standards for food quality and safety.
