Easy ways to care for your makeup brushes

Keep your makeup brushes secure in these soft, fabric brush rolls. Photo via Sirius Republic.

Good makeup looks require good makeup brushes and now that you have invested in some quality, cruelty-free brushes, you will need to maintain them properly to maximize their potential and use.

As your makeup brushes contact your face frequently, it's importantl to keep them clean to protect your skin as well as the brushes.

I recommend disinfecting your brushes daily and deep-cleaning them a few times a month.

For simple daily cleaning, you can try using a brush cleaner such as Smashbox Brush Cleaner ($15) or brush cleansing wipes such as Sephora Collection Makeup Brush Cleansing Wipes ($9).

You can also try using regular makeup remover wipes such as Avon Makeup Remover Wipes with Mineral Complex ($8).

For a deeper clean, try a brush shampoo solution such as e.l.f. Brush Shampoo ($3). Be sure to lay your brushes flat to dry to avoid getting liquid into the ferrules as this may damage and disintegrate your brushes.

If you travel frequently, make sure you have an appropriate storage case for your brushes so they're not loose in your bags as unprotected brushes can get damaged by other objects.

The best thing is to put them in a brush roll, which will keep your brushes in place, secure, and separated from other objects in your travel bag. Try Sirius Beauty's soft felt-lined, washable fabric brush roll ($15).

I use a mild liquid soap and warm water to wash my brushes and it works well.
I love these fabric brush rolls too! They're really cute and I like that they're washable. The whole point is to keep your brushes clean and it doesn't make sense to store them in a non-washable case like leather.
