Incredibly, carjacking statistics are not tracked by the FBI and haven’t been compiled by the Bureau of Justice for nearly a decade. As a result it is difficult to appreciate the full scope of this problem. Carjacking is a serious problem posing great personal injury to the car owner. Carjacking can occur anywhere, anytime, but most incidents happen in large urban centers. No one is immune from this crime, even today a Senator’s daughter was carjacked in Washington D.C. It is not uncommon for criminals to use a weapon which increases the risk to your personal safety. Some people mistakenly believe that only luxury cars are targeted but virtually any vehicle can be taken. Criminals aren’t always motivated by profit. Sometimes they simply need transportation or are simply seeking out a cheap thrill. Other times it is a prelude to rape or homicide. Whatever the motivation, you can reduce your risk by increasing your awareness and following some simple rules. There are a number of specialized tactics some criminals may employ which I will cover in future articles. For now, focus on the basics.
Maintain awareness
Whether driving, parking, or stopped at an intersection you should be aware of things going on around you. Is there someone sitting in the car next o you as you park? Are people loitering on the street corner or trying to approach vehicles ahead of you or in opposite lanes of traffic? Is there a car following you? These are potential problems which can be easily avoided providing you see them before they see you.
Always drive with your doors locked and windows up
When driving in the city you should always drive with your doors locked and windows up. Senator Corker’s daughter reportedly rolled down her window at an intersection to speak to a man approaching her vehicle. He then pulled her out of the vehicle and threw her to the ground according to the Associated Press. Thankfully she wasn’t more seriously hurt. Never roll your window down to a stranger, ever. Period.
Always give yourself room to evade
When stopping behind another vehicle always give yourself enough room to maneuver for an escape. Don’t allow yourself to be trapped between or behind vehicles especially late at night.
Always have your phone within reach
Your phone is a lifeline to help. Crimes like this can occur in seconds and that’s a long time when your phone is tucked away in a jacket, purse, or glove box. Keep your phone out and accessible for quick use.
Use the horn or alarm
Your vehicle likely has one or more features which can draw attention to your situation. One is the automobile horn. The other is the alarm button on your key fob. Either one will naturally draw attention of anyone within ear shot and might scare off the criminal.
Never allow yourself to be taken as a driver
Your chances for injury or death increase exponentially if you go with the carjacker. If you can throw your keys, run, scream, or use the horn or alarm on the key fob before throwing the keys.
