One of the most anticipated shopping events of the year is December 26th. Shoppers flock to malls and stores taking advantage of year end clearance sales. Crowds resemble a Jonas Brothers concert with all the same hysteria. This is the perfect climate for the thief and pick pocket professional. Shoppers expect to be bumped into, crowded, and often times neglect basic safety tips in the rush to get the best deals. That's what the criminals are betting on. Christmas is supposed to be a time of good cheer and benevolence but some unfortunate shoppers will likely have their Christmas spirit diminished by becoming a victim. So when you're hitting the sales tomorrow remember the following tips to reduce your chances of becoming a holiday victim.
- Don't carry a purse. I know this can be a difficult separation but you're much better off carrying your cash and a credit card in your inside jacket pocket or front pants pocket. Never keep them in a rear pants pocket. Don't forget to bring your driver's license too!
- Park your car in a well lit spot, even if you have to walk a little further. Criminals generally target darker areas of parking lots and avoid the glare of street lamps.
- Don't leave purchases in plain view in your vehicle. Use your trunk whenever possible (clean it out of non-essentials if you need to) or cover them with a blanket. If criminals can see your items they're more likely to break in.
- Approach your vehicle cautiously and beware individuals who are standing near-by or try to engage you in conversation. One common tactic is to have one criminal distract you in conversation while the other one bumps into you and steals items from your bag or purse (hence see tip #1)
- Be aware. You don't need to be suspicious or paranoid of everyone but don't walk around with blinders on either. A vast majority of crimes can be avoided easily if the potential victim paid closer attention to their surroundings. Frequently check your cash and credit cards, especially if you're bumped or are approached by a suspicious person.
- Watch out for your neighbor. If you see someone loitering around a car or trying to grab some ones purse get the attention of a store employee or mall security. Hopefully, someone will do the same for you.
