Richard McTear Jr., the man held in custody for throwing baby Emanuel Murray out a car window on I-275, has pled not guilty to charges of first degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and kidnapping in court today. His next court date will be on July 1, 2009. McTear stood before Hillsborough Circuit Judge Gregory P. Holder and entered the not guilty plea.
Emanuel Murray was three months old, when deputies state McTear beat 17-year-old Jasmine Bedwell then fled with the baby in his car seat. The baby’s lifeless body was found on I-275 by a passer-by.
Jasmine Bedwell was at the court proceedings today, as McTear was being led from the courtroom he looked towards the victim's mother and said, “I love you Jasmine.”
As Jasmine Bedwell left the courthouse she was approached by a reporter who asked her for a comment. Jasmine bust into tears and while outside the courtroom, fell to the ground in hysterics. Friends, who assisted her to a vehicle where they left together, consoled her.
The state will determine within the next 45 days whether or not they will seek the death penalty against Richard McTear Jr.
