A 58-year-old Lakeland, Florida man was arrested Monday afternoon on six counts of sexual battery of a child over the age of 12 and engaging in sexual intercourse without disclosing infection of HIV. The man, Jere Michael Temple was a church volunteer at the Rainbow Promise Community Church in Auburndale. Temple had applied to be a Sunday School teacher but was still undergoing a background check, says Reverend Karen Bachum of the congregation. The victim disclosed the abuse to his mother this past weekend.
Temple had befriended the boy and had gained the trust of the boy’s mother. The 13-year-old victim often spent the weekend at the home of Temple and his partner. None of the abuse occurred on church grounds, but rather during weekend visits to Temple’s home. It is believed that Temple molested and raped the child while his partner was asleep. The abuse occurred over a period of six months.
Reverend Karen Bachum of the Rainbow Promise Community Church in Auburndale stated, "I think I can speak for the whole congregation, we're shocked, devastated, hurt." Jere Michael Temple knew that he was HIV positive, yet continued to molest and rape the child repeatedly. The victim, however, never knew that his abuser was HIV positive while the abuse was ongoing; he is currently being tested to determine his HIV status.
Lakeland Police Sergeant Gary Gross stated, “It actually turned my stomach last night listening in on the interview. I've been doing this for 21 years. It was to a point I actually walked off. I really couldn't take anymore of what this guy was doing to this child.”
Jere Michael Temple is currently in jail being held on a $1.5 million dollar bond.
