Haleigh Cummings update: Officials say bone found in river not Haleigh’s (video)
The search for missing Putnam, Florida girl Haleigh Cummings continues even though authorities believe that she was murdered. Haleigh Cummings’ family refuses to give up hope and now they have been inspired to continue with their prayers.
A bone found in the St. Johns River back in April has undergone forensic testing. The bone did not belong to Haleigh Cummings, but rather to a Native American who lived in the land over 100 years ago. The bone is an artifact, not a vital clue in the case of missing Haleigh Cummings.
Haleigh Cummings maternal grandmother and great grandmother spoke with news4jax and said they will never give up searching for Haleigh. Investigators searched the river due to tips provided to them by Tommy Croslin, Tommy’s attorney says.
The bone was found in April during an underwater search at the boat ramp near Shell Harbor Road, according to a statement from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
Mike Warren, a forensic anthropologist studied the bone and determined that it belonged to a Native American.
It is unclear whether additional items were discovered during the underwater search, and if those items are undergoing analysis.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s office stated, “Specific information regarding items recovered during searches, or the details of forensic examinations, cannot be discussed at this time.”
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office continued to state that the case is still considered a criminal investigation.
