Debra Lafave, teacher who had sex with student, requests access to kids (video link)

Debra Lafave

Former middle school teacher, Debra Lafave, sits with her attorney, John Fitzgibbons before the start of her sentencing hearing Tuesday morning, Nov. 22, 2005, at the Hillsborough County Courthouse in Tampa. Lafave pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery, but avoided prison as part of the plea agreement. (CHRIS O'MEARA, ASSOCIATED PRESS / November 22, 2005)

Debra Lafave has made plenty of requests since her conviction for lewd and lascivious battery on a 14 year old student in 2005. She pled guilty to the crime, so there is no doubt that she is a registered sex offender. However, that hasn’t stopped her attorney from filing a motion to allow her to have supervised visits with the children of her family and friends. Of course, the visits would be under the approval of the children’s parents or guardians.

Attorney for Debra Lafave, John Fitzgibbons stated that his client has finished her sex offender therapy, a program that she has been involved in since her conviction in 2005. In March of 2008, Fitzgibbons had filed a motion to request that Debra Lafave’s house arrest be cut short. A judge agreed and ended her house arrest early.

Many find that Debra Lafave has not been treated the same as her male counterparts. At one point, it was alleged that Debra Lafave was “too beautiful” to go to prison for her crime. A careful watch of media reports lends credence to the belief that there may be a bias. Her crimes are often described as an “affair” rather than rape, molestation, or pedophilia.

A hearing will be held on Thursday.
