Apollo Beach woman set on fire remains in critical condition, husband arrested in jail without bail

On November 17, 2009 at approximately 2:30 p.m., Audrey Mabrey was brutally attacked by her estranged husband Christopher Hanney.

According to police reports, Audrey Mabrey was inside her home located at 7565 Oxford Gardens Circle in Apollo Beach, Florida with her estranged husband. The couple, though having marital difficulties, continued to share a residence.

Authorities believe that an argument took place and Christopher Hanney threw a flammable liquid upon Audrey. Reports state that Christopher Hanney also struck his estranged wife in the head with a hammer before igniting the flammable liquid.

Audrey Mabrey was seen by witnesses and neighbors as she fled from the house with her clothing engulfed in flames. She was able to reach a neighbor’s home where she told the neighbor that it was her estranged husband who had set her on fire. The neighbor successfully extinguished the flames and called 911.

When Hillsborough County Sherriff deputies arrived at the scene they found Christopher Hanney in the backyard of the home. He had burn wounds and both he and Audrey were transferred to local hospitals. Christopher Hanney was released from the hospital on November 18, 2009 and was transferred to the Orient Road Jail. Audrey Mabrey was listed as being in critical condition with burns over 80% of her body.

According to reports, Christopher Hanney is a former New York police officer, he is 44 years old. Audrey Mabrey is 26 and it was Christopher Hanney’s second marriage. According to Chris Hanney’s brother, Audrey Mabrey and Christopher Hanney are the parents of two children: a 2 year old and a 10 month old.

Authorities state that a domestic violence report was filed on October 20, 2009 and an arrest affidavit was issued for a previous incident. The arrest affidavit stated that Audrey said Christopher had grabbed her by the waist and pushed her. The case was never prosecuted due to the fact that Audrey Mabrey gave conflicting reports regarding the incident. Friends of Audrey’s have said that Audrey told them that she was afraid of Christopher and that he was abusive and violent. They also said that she had wanted a divorce but didn’t have enough money to file or to leave.

Christopher Hanney has been charged with attempted murder, he is currently being held without bail. Audrey Mabrey remains in the hospital.
