St. Louis – With our children going back to school in 2-4 weeks there are things they need to remember and learn. Safety is an important part of being a school student; walking to school, riding the bus, Internet school usage, and child predators can all be dangers. Teach your children the following tips for keeping themselves safe in any situation.
- Walk to school with a group of friends or a responsible adult. This goes for walking home too.
- Make sure to have an adult at the bus stop before and after school to make sure the kids get home safely.
- If an adult makes the child feel uncomfortable or is following them have the child call 911 and go back to school, to the police, or to a friend’s home as quick as possible. They need to find a safe place.
- Make a code word that will be used when someone else they do not know will pick them up. Every time you have someone pick your child up from school they have to know your secret code word or you child will not get in the vehicle.
- Never give out personal information to strangers or on the Internet.
- If you’re using the Internet at school do not send pictures, give out phone numbers, or believe what people say online. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable tell an adult right away.
For more info: You do not want to scare you child by teaching them about predators or safety. The idea is to educate your children so they will know what to do if a situation occurs and so they stay safe in any environment. Open communication is key to developing trust between you and your child.
