Two abused puppies seized in connection with a criminal case in San Diego are now being offered for adoption, San Diego County officials said Tuesday.
The animals were taken by San Diego County Animal Control officers during an investigation in San Diego on June 22 after one puppy, then three months old, was kicked and thrown from the roof of a home, San Diego County's Dan DeSousa said in a statement.
X-rays during an examination of "Almond," a German shepherd / chow chow mix, revealed not only fresh multiple fractures of the hips and ribs consistent with blunt trauma, but previously healed broken bones.

To authorities, those injuries indicated the puppy had been abused before.
Authorities also seized a second puppy on the property named "Joy," that also showed previously healed bone breaks.
County animal control officers arrested Edgar Rodriguez, 22, after their investigation. On August 4, he admitted to one count of felony animal abuse.
His sentencing is set for Sept. 15.
Because of the injuries, "Almond" required extensive orthopedic surgery and is still undergoing physical therapy as he awaits a new owner.
His treatment continues at Cutting Edge K9 Rehabilitation Center and county authorities are publicizing the case in hopes both animals find happier homes and better treatment at the hands of new, more humane owners.

Incidentally, while this much publicized case will no doubt generate many offers to adopt these two, there are plenty of other dogs and cats in the county's shelters that could also use a good homel.
For example, a search as of this writing, for all dogs in the county up for adoption shows there are 166 hoping for good homes.
The same search reveals 170 cats and 34 "others," that are mostly bunny rabbits.
But the "other" list also include ducks, mice and at least one rat.
