County medical examiners have released the name of an Oceanside man who died after being struck by a car while attempting to cross a busy street on Tuesday.
Harry Dwayne Cummings Jr., 61, was struck by a car during the afternoon commute in the 3500 block of Mission Avenue, Oceanside police said.
Cummings, a laborer, had just finished working for the day. His wife and mother-in-law had arrived in a vehicle on the opposite side of the street to give him a ride home, police said.
Cummings made it to the center median, and he appeared to see an approaching vehicle from the westbound lane, but decided to cross in front of the car, police said.
The driver, 39, of Escondido, swerved his 2004 Ford Taurus, but was unable to avoid striking Cummings with the front of his vehicle, police said.
Cummings was "jaywalking," police said, while witnesses told investigators the Taurus appeared to be traveling at or near the posted speed limit.
He was taken by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Anyone who saw the accident is asked to contact accident investigator Gene Gruntowicz at (760) 435-4753.
