The final holiday weekend of summer is a time for celebration, but authorities in San Diego County have this warning for drivers -- don't go overboard.
In the city of San Diego, officers scheduled a DUI checkpoint beginning at 9 p.m. Friday night and set to end at 3 a.m. Saturday.
Authorities hope such checkpoints can help cut down on drinking and driving, and the accidents that can be caused by impaired drivers.
The city of Encinitas is deploying deputies not only to conduct patrols looking for drinking drivers, but to operate a checkpoint Friday night at 8 p.m.
DUI checkpoints are also set for National City, Poway, San Diego, Imperial Beach, and San Marcos.
In addition, extra patrols looking for suspected impaired drivers will be on the streets in Del Mar, Vista, Solana Beach, San Marcos and Poway.
If you run into one of these checkpoints and your driver's license is suspended or revoked, the Sheriff’s Department is placing automatic 30-day holds on vehicles. Storage costs can cost up to $1,500 and legal costs can add to the financial toll.
Authorities urge anyone who sees someone who might be impaired behind the wheel this weekend to call 911.
