The federal government continues to tell us that there are 12 million illegal aliens currently living in the United States. However, the actual number in undoubtedly four to five times higher. The way the feds arrive at their numbers is as absurd as their assertion that we can maintain law and order without actually defending our borders. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan granted amnesty to the nation’s illegal alien population. At the time, we were told that population totaled between two to three million. However, amnesty was actually granted to more than five million who had crossed our borders illegally. Washington arbitrarily estimates that every year since 1986, a half million illegal aliens take up residence in this country, either by over-staying their visa or by crossing into this country illegally. Additionally, they believe that the one million illegal aliens who did not qualify for the 1986 Amnesty (many were criminals), simply stayed anyway. When you multiply a half million by 22 years, then add the additional million criminal aliens to the total, you have 12 million illegal aliens. That is the figure which U.S. politicians pushing for amnesty constantly espouse. These same politicians never take the time to explain to us just how they came up with that figure. However, the U.S. Border Patrol places a much higher estimate on the number of illegal aliens now in this country. For many years, the number of apprehensions at the border have averaged about one million. When you then use the very conservative estimate that at least three times that many got away, over 22 years, along with all of the people who never return home after their visa has expired, you get a much different number. Using the Border Patrol’s own data and considering the relative ease with which drug smugglers and illegal aliens make multiple crossings into this country, the more realistic number is much closer to 60-70 million. This is why Obama wants to count illegal aliens in next year’s Census. We will be told that granting citizenship to such a large group of people at once will be a tremendous boost to our tax base, and end our exploding budget deficits. Of course, the vast majority of illegal aliens do not now, nor will they ever make enough money to even qualify for income taxes, they will simply join the 45 percent of Americans who currently pay nothing and our National Debt will continue to soar. The real reason Obama wants to grant the mostly Hispanic population amnesty is to secure the vote that they would then have as American citizens. Obama believes that doing so would assure Democratic control of the White House and Congress for the next several generations. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

THIS ARTICLE IS UNBELIEVABLE. This person is saying 1 of every >5 Americans are illegal aliens because the American population is about 300 million.
I really think, we should compare and contrast how each illegal’s are going to help the country. For example, leave those with a degree, who’s more likely to own businesses, and who really bring value to America and we should go after others who bring the value down.
If Obama plans to give them amnesty, I will agree due to the fact that we as a country can get something out of them. I know you talking out of hatred with this article, but if we put some sense to it we all will agree it is best to allow some of them to be Americans.
And Dave, I think your work so far shows some sign of HATE, while people like you should be showing sign of FIX. I am not asking you or your likes to be Democrates neither am I asking you to follow a certain path.

Dear Lesly: You only need to come to the east end of long island to get the greater perspective on this issue. While I don't know the number of illegals in this country it is certainly much more the 12 million. Haveing say that, if the number was more like 30 million would this number change your mind on this issue and if not what number would?
Whatever the number of illegals is, it's still very high -- in the multi-millions. The humane, cost-effective, and true middle ground way to deal with the illegals who are here is to finally and consistently enforce our immigration laws and cut off the jobs magnet. This will greatly reduce the illegal population over time without the need for mass deportations. Unfortunately, Obama is gutting immigration enforcement while pretending to go after employers. We must continue to make the voice of the American people heard: NO FORM OF ANY AMNESTY, SECURE OUR BORDER AND ENFORCE THE LAWS.
How many illegal aliens are here? too many. If we really want to know how many, the upcoming census should tell us. Except the 2010 census will be riddled with fraud due to employment of ACORN currently being investigated an several states for voter fraud in the last election.
The real issue of illegal alien numbers is that we just don't know how many are here. This is because they came into the country without any documentation. When people come here from other countries legally, we have their ID. passport, fingerprints and photo to identify them. They are entered into our immigration system database and we can count them. We can't find them when they fail to leave under the terms of their visa, but we know who they are.
Another provision required of legal immigrants is to be self supporting adults with arranged employment. They can't just show up and go job hunting on the corner like the millions of illegal immigrants in communities around our country. Send them all home.
The point of this article is right-on. The Summer 2007 issue of the "Social Contract" journal contains a collection several studies that present current estimates of the number of illegal aliens who have evaded capture and are living in the US.

Steve is quite correct. By leaving the borders open and gutting enforcement, the Democratic party is carrying out the North American Union, and de facto AMNESTY.
Lesly, it doens't matter if someone has a degree. If they are here illegally, they need to be KICKED OUT. Where do you get this perverted notion that the law is this for this group, and another thing for a different group,etc. This is the United States. Since it would seem that there are far more then the 12 million illegals in the country why does our government and the pro-amnesty crowd keep using it. Further they have been using 12 million as their estimate for at least ten years. I think the reason is simple because if the American people realize the extent of the problem there would be a national outrage that would take to the streets and it perhaps this that they are afraid of but it . If the Republicans were smart (and therein is the rub) they should insist on a cap to any amnesty given. Even if that number goes to 15 million we will be way ahead of the game. If they give a blanket amnesty we may have time kiss America goodbye. They have already in a short time shoved their language and their lawless way down our throats. They have effectively changed the political make-up of this country and the worst is yet to come. Why are we letting this happen?

So, without the border patrol telling us how THEY arrived at their number that for every illegal immigrant caught "at least three times that many got away", Dave just accepts it as gospel.
Saying that there must be 3 million illegal immigrants entering the US annually because for each caught "at least three times that many got away" is absurd given that the SAME immigrant is often caught multiple times.

Hi Lesly, I don't think Dave was trying to show hate, I think he was trying to understand why it is that we want to continually try to circumvent the law instead of following it. People can become Americans by applying for a visa, getting sponsored, etc., coming to the US legally and then working to become a citizen. The question isn't are latinos fit to be US citizens. We have many fine upstanding Latino citizens now. The question is, how do we run an orderly, law abiding society when we don't follow the law? Are there improvements to be made, most certainly, in every aspect of our government, but we need to make the changes according to the law, not in a lawless way. We need to be tough on crime by using the laws we have and apply the law equitably to all. That means government people should obey the same laws as the rest of us and face the same consequences. Fairness and equality, makes for a good society don't you think?

I am 70 years old. Only since illegal immigration has become a national problem have I been accused of racism. My children were in school when latino (Mexican) immigrants were treated with disdain. My daughter came to me and said, "Mom, I have a problem. Some of my friends don't want me to be friends with Gloria. If I stay Gloria's friend, they don't want me as a friend anymore. What should I do?" I told her I couldn't make the choice for her, as she would have to live with the consequenses of her decision. What was the right thing to do? Only my daughter could decide. To my everlasting admiration, my daughter chose to keep her latino friend. She did lose some of her old friends but she learned honor, integrity, and the true meaning of friendship. It's really hard to say how many illegal aliens are in this Country, but you can be sure there are more than 12 million.
Illegal aliens have made America the dumping ground for all their illegal alien children, then we have to school them and give them free medical care.

never mind how many illegal immigrants are here in the U.S. When one is found and it is proven that he or she has not legal documents DEPORT them within 12 hours of having proof that they are illegally here.
If you look up the Student Stats at www.greatschools.net you will find that the percentage of Hispanics is equivalent to the number of children receiving free or reduced price lunches and the number of children speaking Spanish at home.
The state average is around 51 percent but you will find it hard to find a school where Latinos are less than 80 percent of the students, especially here in LA.
This year with money tight, the USC system has limited enrollment to students with good grades. The number of Latinos has dropped significantly since last semester.
With the average cost of students in LA costing $9,626 each per year, does anyone think that any illegal alien pays enough taxes to cover the cost of their children.
Now Swartzenegger and Villaraigossa are going to spend $70 million to train them to be green technicians at union wages. Wages that are probably higher than your college career will pay, and then they are going to force us to pay for green energy projects.
