The Marshall family
On the night of June 27, Marty Marshall and his family were standing outside a friend’s home in Akron, OH. The group had gathered to watch a fireworks display at nearby Firestone Park, the festive night ended suddenly, when the family as well as their friends were brutally attacked by a group of nearly 50 black teenagers. Marty Marshall, a 39-year-old construction worker came to the aid of his friend who was sucker punched by one of the teenagers, and was soon overwhelmed by the growing mob. His 13-year-old daughter Rachel was shoved to the ground, while mom Yvonne tried to shield their 14-year-old son Donald from the attackers by pushing him into the bushes. There was no incident which led to the attack, but as the black teenagers approached the Marshall family, they shouted: ''This is our world'' and ''This is a black world.'' The only motivation behind this crime seems to be the fact that the Marshalls are white. The savage beating went on for several minutes, but seemed like an eternity to the family. Marty suffered a concussion and several deep bruises to his eye. He spent five nights in the critical care unit at Akron General Medical Center. Marty told reporters: “My thing is, I didn't want this, but I was in fear for my wife, my kids and my friends. I felt I had to stay out there to protect them, because those guys were just jumping, swinging fists and everything.” He went on: ''I knew I was going to get beat, but not as bad as I did. But I did it to protect my family. I didn't have a choice. There was no need for this. We should be all getting along. But to me, it seems to be racist.'' Despite the obvious nature of the attack, Akron police have not classified the beating as a hate crime. Lt. Rick Edwards of the Akron Police Dept. said: ''We don't know if it's a known gang, or just a group of kids.'' The Marshalls say they now live in fear, and are reluctant to go outside their home. Marty may have best summed up the situation by adding: 'This makes you think about your freedom. In all reality, where is your freedom when you have this going on?'' Of course, many believe that this case is only the latest example of a possible bias by law enforcement in crimes which could seemingly qualify as so-called ‘hate crimes.’ In 2007, a mob beating of a white teenager in Norfolk, VA by black teenagers stirred-up racial tensions and had many of Norfolk’s white residents asking why the boy’s attackers had not been charged with a hate crime. The case gained national attention, after a video of the attack was given to the news media and was posted on Youtube. The video showed Damin O’Rourke, 13 standing in the street in his West Ocean View neighborhood when five black teens rushed towards him and began shoving him. O’Rourke was punched repeatedly, and kicked in the face after being knocked to the ground. Again, despite the overwhelming evidence, police did not charge the black teens with a hate crime and downplayed the obvious racial overtones to the case. Norfolk Police spokesman Chris Amos told reporters: “Investigators have determined that a non-race related altercation took place prior to the assault. Investigators believe that this earlier altercation escalated to the assault caught on videotape. Investigators have further determined that this incident was not gang-related in nature.” O’Rourke later said that he and a friend had been threatened and chased by seven black teens. The young man who captured the beating on video received threats of bodily harm from friends of the suspects. Ultimately, six black teenagers were found responsible for the attack, and were only charged with, and later convicted of misdemeanor assault. In 2007, there were 3,802 white Americans charged with hate crimes, while only 1,045 black Americans were charged with the same offense. ? ?

If this had been a group of white kids beating on a black family, exclaiming "this is a white world", would it then be a hate crime?
Actually, if it was a black family, white people all over America would be questioning the truth of the claims. People would scrutinize a black family, with no serious or visible injuries, who claimed that a gang of 30-50 white kids appeared out of nowhere to beat them for no reason, shouting: "It's a white world." Because the allegation is made by whites against blacks, though, people assume truth. No matter how preposterous it sounds.
We simply can't wait on a police investigation. It must be labeled a "hate crime" immediately.

The police haven't said this wasn't a hate crime. They said they are investigating, and they aren't ready to call it a hate crime yet. If the attack on the Marshall family happened the way Mr. Marshall says it did, I don't think anyone would contend it isn't a "hate crime." Why might we doubt the story? Well, it seems preposterous for one thing. A gang of fifty black kids appears out of nowhere shouting "It's a black world" (yeah, that sounds like something a racist gang might say), beats this family, then vanishes. Nobody is seriously or visibly hurt.
We shouldn't question that? What if it turns out Marshall is a racist, got into a fight with a black male, and made up the rest? That seems as likely.
The police are doing the right thing by withholding judgment pending investigation. If it turns out the story is true, I'll be the first to label it a "hate crime." For now, call me skeptical.

shawn: If your comment was directed to me, yes -- I missed the part where the attack was captured on video. If the attack on the Marshall family is on video, I'd love to see it. Seems like that would likely resolve the issue. To my knowledge, no such video exists, though.

OK... The picture is clear to me now! The Marshall family are all racist's. They beat the hell out of each other and then made up the story about the black kids... I understand now! How sill of me!
nymets: Have you seen the video of Marshall's interview? I have. No visible injury at all. And read the original reports of this. Marshall "claimed" to have had a concussion and "deep bruises." Dave Gibson writes it as though true. Doesn't make it so.
A concussion and an eye bruise, even if true, is consistent with many things short of a gang beating at the hands of fifty teens. Ever been in a fight?
Surely, you understand the point here: If Marshall and his family were attacked by so many in the manner depicted, where is the corroborating injury? Who knows? Maybe it was a roving gang of black pacifists.
Again, so as not to be misconstrued: If it happened, I'm appalled. And it is a hate crime. But I'm not prepared to accept the "fifty kids appeared out of nowhere, visciously beat us, then vanished" story without more investigation. Apparently the police aren't either.
Gotta: You make a good point for me. The assumption you mockingly set forth is absurd. We can't know Marshall made this up, or grossly exaggerated it. I'm not saying he did. I'm saying, "We don't know." So why must we label it a hate crime before a proper investigation? Why do you assume the truth of it based on hearing one side?
And please show me evidence that this family got "the hell beaten out of them." That would be some corroboration. I've seen Marshall's interview. No visible injury. I think his daughter made some claim of a bloody lip. Seems like shoddy work for a gang. You'd at least expect them to break a bone, or leave some mark.

This homeschool family claims that 30-50 black kids attacked them, on a neighborhood street, just after the city fireworks display was over, chanting "this is our world." The video of the father shows no signs of struggle. The daughter, a frail little thing, has no visible wounds despite her story that she was bleeding and pulled one of the attackers off her father. The mother has no visible wounds. They don't sound in shock or scared, despite talking about how scared they are. Not a single witness can confirm that even one of these 50 kids was there. There are no suspects.
The police aren't calling it a hate crime because they have enough sense to realize the story probably isn't true. Too bad right wing bloggers are by nature not very skeptical, especially when they have an opportunity to be perceived as victims. Conservatives do love to play that victim card.
I have to go to work. Damn. I appreciate the debate with you guys, though we don't agree. Let me leave you with this:
Why do you want to believe Marshall's story so badly? Why does it bother you that the police would investigate further before declaring it a "hate crime?" And would you subject the story to a similar lack of scrutiny if a black family said it about an alleged gang of thirty to fifty whites?
I don't pretend to know what happened that night. None of us can. But I'd like to know before determining what the incident was or was not. So I'll continue to review the evidence as it comes in, and I'll make a reasoned judgment when enough exists. Whether the conclusion fits my preconceived notions about race or not. I forgot the golden rule in our newly formed politically correct world too… When blacks or other people “of color” are singled out and abused by whites it is “Racist!” When whites are singled out and abused by people “of color” it is “Pride” motivated.

The question posed by the article--"Is there a double standard?"--answers itself. Of course there is. We all know it already. If the story turns out to be true (and "if" is not insignificant here), then obviously, a hate crime was committed.
But it will be the wrong story: the "right" story is when whites commit hate crimes; the "wrong" story is when blacks commit hate crimes. The sheer cowardice and hypocrisy that defines our times is never clearer than in alleged cases like this, in which the actors deviate from the politically correct script.
Monkeys belong in cages, not on the streets. We didn't have problems like this when they were picking cotton. Blacks are not evolved enough to live in civilized society. Many blacks live in peace with their white neighbors. They love their families, respect their neighbors, and work hard to provide a better life for themselves. But the majority of blacks behave like animals who were raised since children to hate "whitey". Both blacks and whites must face reality. Those blacks who have chosen to live in peace with the rest of society should be praised, respected and protected. The blacks who live like animals belong in cages.
This is why every decent, law abiding person person should carry(legally). Now if he and his friend had a 1911 on them, something tells me things would have gone down a little bit differently.
I would have to see all the facts before making an determination but I love to see how the liberal and politically correct persons in this country, need all the proof they can get before calling it a hate crime when it comes to a white family being attacked by blacks, but when it is vice versa, there is no proof needed to label it a hate crime. There have been many so called hate crimes that supposedly was targeted at blacks by whites that have turned out to be completely FALSE.
But then again my personal opinion regarding "hate crimes" is that all crimes are essentially hate crimes. This politically correct crap is for the birds. A crime is a crime period. Race, gender, size, or whatever should not even be considered. Look at the crime, if convicted, give the sentence. It should not be more if the person was a minority, or a different sexual orientation, or a pokadotted weirdo praying to a grasshopper goddess. This just raises tensions, not helps them. And that is my thoughts.
Liz makes a good point. Many so-called PC folk wouldn't wait on evidence before declaring a "hate crime" if the victim family in this case was black. They'd assume the allegations were true, and go from there. And people with more conservative views would criticize them for it. Rightly so.
Now the tables are turned. The victim family is white. And conservatives are doing the very thing we criticize liberals for doing. It serves political interests to believe a hate crime occurred. So they accept it, without regard for proof.
I'm liberal minded, but don't consider myself a liberal. I'd want proof regardless of the race of the victim. Saying we don't need to wait on evidence before deciding depending upon the race of the victim seems bizarre to me. We should want "all the evidence we can get" before drawing conclusions. I wish we apply that principle consistently -- without regard for the racial dynamic.

There is no double standard. "Hate Crimes" are crimes aimed at minorities. Whites don't really count any more. In fact, the hate crime stats of the FBI don't count Hispanics in the criminal case, but they are counted as victims. Presumably they are lumped into the 'white' category by the FBI. google the color of crime.
In the name of equality we do not treat the crimes equally. We look first to the victim for a 'status' determination and then decide how bad the crime is.
But I am sure we are all much better off, aren't we?
Why does any crime have to be labeled a hate crime? A crime is a crime is a crime. Obviously, criminals hate everything and everyone when it comes to what they want. I think we must return to the K.I.S.S method! Keep it simple stupid. PC must go!!!!

If it were, Reverends Sharpton and Jackson would ride into town, talking about the poor disadvantaged youths and how society is to blame for all this.

Steve, and some other posters, are saying that we can't jump to conclusions that this is a hate crime against whites. But people should realize that there is a pattern here. This is no isolated incident. This sort of assault happens with great frequency and it is regularly covered up by the media (except, maybe, in local news). Furthermore, law enforcement is, as a matter of policy, extremely biased against whites in their application of "hate-crime" laws. Black on white murder and rape have reached such proportions that they can rightfully be called "genocide". We need to be more vocal in defending whites as a group - with our voices, with our pens and with our guns.
This is nothing new I, along with two friends, were assaulted by 14 -20 black males; who used bats, chains, and bottles to beat us, because we were white - they told us. This happened August 15, 1990, in Terre Haute, Indiana; anyone can check. I suffered a concussion and had to get stitches, one of my friends suffered a concussion and broken orbital bone, another had his cheek bone broken; we all had various abrasions and contusions. The THPD interviewed the three of us, and let us know that they knew who all of the thugs were, but that a few of them were under 18 (me and my friends were all 18); if we pressed the matter, they would have to charge us with assaulting a minor. To add insult to injury, the local paper posted all three of our names and addresses in the police blotter.
This has been going on a long time, it is only now coming out in the open; in the PC world, only whites can be racists and only non-whites can be victims.

When police start off suspecting a "hate crime," they recieve additional resources from the state and feds to hunt for the perps. That, Steve, is why the declaration of the cops at the start of this mattered. BTW, for a clearer example of double standard, how many of you folks know of the black guy in LA who raped and strangeled at least 32 elderly white women? The LA cops asserted race had nothing to do with victim choice on that one too. I resent the reality that under the law, I have less value then my "non-white" counterparts. I resent that the constition doesn't apply to me, a second generation citizen of the USA. I honestly wonder if police chiefs and polititions are going to have to be attacked in order to express the depth of rage I know others like me feel, and hope it doesn't have to go that far.

The truly scary part is the brain washing of young kids. Every burglar on TV is now a white male. Every other white male character on TV is now semi-retarded. Every black male on TV is now an Einstein or a very benevolent person. Young white children are being brain-washed by this stuff.

I think the best way to start a fight against this PC nonsense is to pinpoint one television network and massively boycott it. No negotiations, no understanding. White guys need to pick one media outlet and boycott it until it fails. The best media company to boycott would be CBS because they are already very weak ($5.97 Market Cap, and a negative 17.85 EPS). If we boycotted all advertisers who advertise on CBS that would probably be most effective.

Police are investigating a reported hate crime, after three men were attacked outside a Minneapolis bar...because of their skin color. They say a man jumped from some bushes near the corner of 17th Avenue and University and started yelling racial slurs..they say Richard Brown, of Minneapolis, attacked them with a six inch knife...Brown was charged with second degree assault with bias. He could face up to 12 years in prison if convicted.

In 1995, responding to a local FBI solicitation to speak with victims of hate crimes, I entered their Monterey, California office to report death threats from a black crack addict neighbor, against whom I'd obtained a restraining order. The FBI officials told me that they would never prosecute African-Americans for hate crimes. When I tried to enforce the restraining order, the black city administration of Seaside, California declared me "5150 racist wacko," and a police officer showed up at my front door to warn me that the police had been ordered to assassinate me. Next, I was assaulted by the black chief of police while passing out campaign literature for a white mayoral candidate on public grounds. My pregnant wife and I put our house up for sale and moved out of Seaside, California.
If there was any sanity left in the world, the national media would have covered this atrocity to the same degree that they covered Michael Jackson's death. But as usual, they did an outstanding job of suppressing it ... making sure the status quo wasn't threatened.

The only burglars you see on TV are white males??? SERIOUSLY??? What part of the country do you live in? That doesn't correspond to my experience, where two out of every three crimes I see on the news regard African Americans. It's fine that you have an opinion that whites are discriminated against, but to use such a ridiculously false premise to support it is laughable.

Whites simply have to do one thing to straighten this out - vote in blocks - white candidates only - like our brown enemies do. We then appoint the judges, make all laws, and make our enemies leave here.
