A Rockland County man was drunk when he ran a stop sign and his SUV smashed into a sedan in Closter yesterday, sending a U.S. Postal Service employee of more than three decades to the hospital with serious injuries, authorities said this afternoon.
Patrick Martin Doyle of New City, N.Y., was headed south on West Street in his white Nissan Pathfinder when it blew the stop sign and plowed into a white Oldsmobile sedan driven east on Harrington Avenue by Kevin Greutert, 57, of River Edge, said Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli.
Greutert was pinned inside and had to be cut out of the vehicle. Both he and Doyle were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, but Doyle was released soon after.
Greutert, meanwhile, suffered a fractured pelvis and a collapsed lung, along with assorted bumps and bruises, said Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor John Higgins, who heads Molinelli's Fatal Accident Unit.
Detectives with the office who followed the ambulances to the hospital later obtained a warrant for Doyle's arrest on charges of assault by auto in a school zone. Doyle, who works for an armored car company, also received several motor vehicle summonses.
Investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology tests on Doyle's blood. He remains free on $50,000 bail pending a first court appearance tomorrow.
