Police have charged a man with killing his 6-month-old baby and the mother with doing nothing to stop the abuse, Hudson County authorities said today.
Ethan Ruiz was alive when the couple brought him to the emergency room of Christ Hospital in Jersey City early Friday evening, authorities said. He was pronounced dead soon after.
Ethan had several broken ribs, a torn liver and various bruises on his body, Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.
The veteran prosecutor said he was at a loss to understand such "indifference to the value" of an infant's life -- not only by the father but by the mother, as well.
Miguel Ruiz, 31, of Union City, is charged with aggravated manslaughter. Erika Flores, 34, is charged with endangerment.
