Rapper Corey Miller jailed today in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana

Corey Miller, a New Orleans rap artist who formerly went by the moniker “C-Murder” was jailed today for allegedly leaving his residence in violation of home incarceration rules. Thirty-eight year old Miller was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center around noon and he is set to remain there until Wednesday.  On Wednesday, Miller will appear before 24TH Judicial District Judge Hans Liljeberg when Liljeberg will decide whether to keep Miller jailed until trial or if he will be released under home detention. Until today, Miller had been under home detention on a $500,000.00 bond. He is required to wear a transmitter attached to his ankle, commonly known as an “ankle bracelet”. The transmitter sends a signal to a receiver if the person wearing the bracelet strays too far away from the unit. A company specializing in home detention provides round the clock monitoring service.

Miller resides with his grandmother in Kenner, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. Two weeks ago, he was in court on similar charges that he left the home just after 3:00 a.m., around the time that his monitoring equipment signaled his absence. Miller claims he was in bed sleeping at that time. Because there was not clear and convincing evidence that Miller had actually left the home during that time period, Judge Liljeberg released him.

Miller was charged with second degree murder in connection with the January 12, 2002 shooting death of sixteen year old Steve Thomas at the Platinum Club in the Westbank community of Harvey, Louisiana. Miller maintains his innocence with respect to the incident. If convicted on the second degree murder charge, he faces a mandatory life sentence. In September of 2003, Miller was convicted of second degree murder in connection with Thomas’ death. Months later, a judge threw out the conviction because of a defense claim that the prosecution improperly withheld the criminal background of three of its witnesses. The Louisiana Supreme Court upheld her decision and a request for bond was granted. Thereafter, he was ordered into home detention. On several occasions, prosecutors have attempted to have Miller’s bond revoked, citing instances where they claim he violated home detention rules, including complaints that he was out of range of the monitoring equipment more than once.

C-Murder is the brother of music mogul Percy “Master P” Miller and Vyshonn “Silkk Tha Shocker” Miller and the uncle of Percy “Lil Romeo” Miller, Jr. The Millers hail from the notorious B.W. Cooper (formerly known as the Calliope Project) or “CP3” located near Galvez and Earhart in New Orleans’ Third Ward. He now uses the stage name “C-Miller” and he has been associated with No Limit and TRU records. He is also a member of TRU, a rap group that also includes Master P and Silkk Tha Shocker and he has provided guest appearances for numerous other artists. A vast amount of hype ensued with respect to the stage name C-Murder, once he was actually charged in connection with the shooting death of Steve Thomas.
