Jaycee Lee Dugard and family have emotional reunion

After 18 years of captivity in an Antioch, Calif. backyard, Jaycee Lee Dugard experienced an emotional reunion with her family last week. But according to the NY Daily News, everyone was ecstatic to see one another and everything is going smoothly, considering the circumstances.

Jaycee’s stepfather, Carl Probyn told ABC News, “It’s a minute-by-minute thing.”

FBI Special Agent Chris Campion, who diligently worked on the case since Jaycee’s abduction in 1991, said during an FBI podcast, “There’s going to be a period of adjustment, no doubt, but they’re doing very well at this point.”

"It was a very emotional scene - both of them [Jaycee and her mother] were just overjoyed to be with each other again," Campion said. "The two daughters are probably as happy as Jaycee is to be part of this family."

Shayna Probyn, now 19, was only an infant when her half-sister, was kidnapped at a school bus stop by sex offender Phillip Garrido. The Daily News reports that Shayna wrote on her MySpace page, “I have a lot of over to share with my sister and new nieces.”

Jaycee’s two daughters, who Garrido fathered while holding her captive, “…are so fragile. Everything is about these girls and doing things the right way,” said Probyn.

After Garrido was arrested last week, Jaycee told the girls, Starlet, 15, and Angel, 11, that their father had kidnapped, imprisoned, and raped her at the age of 11. Probyn said the girls “…are upset about this because that’s their father and he’s in jail.”

A team of professionals is assisting with easing Jaycee and her children back into normal life, after years of confinement and captivity. Probyn commented, “It’s going to take years. How do you deal with this?”

In the meantime, police completed a search of Garrido’s property using cadaver dogs, but finding nothing. Authorities suspect Garrido may be connected to a series of unsolved murders of a school girl and several prostitutes that occurred in the area in the 1990s.

He and his wife Nancy have pleaded not guilty to the 29 felony counts against them for kidnapping, raping, and holding Jaycee captive for almost two decades.
