Vernon Forrest, also dubbed ‘The Viper,’ was shot to death during a robbery Saturday night.
According to reports, Forrest, 38, who lived in Atlanta, stopped at a gas station to put air in the tires of his Jaguar.
An armed man approached him and robbed him at gunpoint. Forrest was also armed and chased after the man for several hundred feet. The two men exchanged gunfire according to Atlanta Police Det. Lt. Keith Meadows.
Forrest suffered several shots to the back, and there was evidence he had used his weapon, but authorities are unsure if the assailant was shot.
The 11-year-old son of Forrest’s girlfriend was in the vehicle at the time of the robbery and gave police a description of the perpetrator, but did not witness the shootings.
Forrest had a 41-3 career record with 29 knockouts. Last September he reclaimed his World Boxing Council title by beating Sergio Mora, a man ten years his junior.
The boxer was deeply involved in his charitable foundation called Destiny’s Child, which helps those with mental disabilities.
