On Wednesday, police continued their search for 5-year-old Shaniya Davis, who went missing from her Fayetteville, NC home early Tuesday morning.
Investigators have now recovered a blanket from a neighbor’s trash can that may belong to the little girl.
Neighbor, Andrea Moore, told WRAL that police said the blanket found in her garbage belonged to Shaniya.
Moore also said loud noises outside her home woke her up at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
“It sounded like somebody was beating,” Moore told WRAL.
She was awakened again shortly thereafter when police knocked on her door to tell her they were confiscating her trash due to evidence it may contain.
“Every time I think about it, it upsets me," said Moore. The idea that this baby was missing is bad in itself, but actually feeling like I had something to do with it, that’s pretty hard to deal with—this evidence being in my trash can.”
She also told the news station that police revealed the blanket was covered in feces and feces was also found on the Davis’ back porch.
“I hope that she’s found alive. I don’t know what to think about this. From what I’ve heard and how the situation happened, it doesn’t add up to me. I don’t know what happened to her. I don’t know what happened at the house,” Moore said.
Police dogs have searched the neighborhood of the Davis home, in addition to a wooded area nearby, but didn't pick up Shaniya’s scent.
Sgt. Tracey Bass-Caine of the Fayetteville Police Department told WRAL, “Anytime you have a child of this age [missing] or a child where the circumstances [of her disappearance] are questionable, then of course, this takes precedence.”
Shaniya is described as 3 feet tall, weighing 40 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt with pink underwear. She is thin and has a scar on her foot.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Fayetteville police at 910-433-1856.

My heart goes out to her parents, especially her father who tried to do the right thing in allowing the mother to care for the child. I would hope that the mother had nothing to do with this terrible crime!

I've heard and read about a lot of crimes being commited against children especially this year and they have really saddened me. But this one has made me sick to my stomach. This precious helpless little girl. How can people be so crule and heartless just to satisfy their lustful appetites? A part of me died when I heard about Shaniya. She's surely in a better place than we are.

I'm so sorry that this happen to that little girl. Last nite when I heard that she was found, it upset me so bad I couldn't do anything but cry. The woman that given birth to her didn't want her she should have given her back to her father: She isnt good as a female dog, because dogs takes care of their litters.

this is very sad and horrible. how could anybody harm something so prescious. shes an angel who ever did this to this child should be sickened by themselves. they should be killed for killing someone. this poor child probavly havent done anything to anyone. and this is the outcome of a life like this. its a crying shame. rest in peace.
I believe society needs to be outraged. these predators need to be terminated, or castrated, so that there is no chance that they can harm again.

I am very overragous because they find this lil girl dead my prayers go out to her and her family. But mom is praying for what she did love ya may you rest in peace!!!:)
The predators need to be put to death. Anyone who would harm a child needs to be removed from society forever. I hate that tax payers money is wasted on scum in prison. Less money is spent on a child in foster care than the upkeep of a prison inmate. People need to stop bringing unwanted children into this world - it's crazy. Look at the mother in this case - pregnant and two other children all by three different men and receiving public assistance - so wrong. People should not receive tax payers money to bring kids into this world that they cannot afford to take care of.
