Autopsy says Arturo Gatti may have committed suicide

On Saturday, Jornal do Commercio newspaper reported that boxing great Arturo Gatti could have committed suicide, or could have been accidentally killed or murdered. The publication said it obtained a copy of the coroner’s findings.

Currently, Gatti’s wife, Amanda Rodrigues Gatti is being accused by Brazilian police of murdering her husband by stabbing and strangling him a week ago while he slept.

The autopsy reportedly said that Gatti’s body was “suspended and hanged, indicating he may have committed suicide.” It also said that “murder or accidental death” could not be ruled out.

USA Today reported that a spokesperson for the coroner’s office, Paula Cysneiros, would not confirm Jornal do Commercio’s report.

Gatti’s wife claims to be innocent of the crime, and her attorney, Celio Avelino, has stated she is too “fragile” and “skinny” to have killed a “boxing champion.”

A spokesperson for police, Milena Saraiva said that Amanda may have encouraged her husband to drink so she could overpower him. “He was very drunk and that made it easier for her. He was sleeping when she did this. She waited for the moment when he was drunk enough for her to do it.”

Police also believe that the crime scene may have been altered before they arrived—meaning Amanda could have tried to make it look like Gatti had committed suicide.

In a handwritten letter to the Associated Press, Amanda wrote, “I’m innocent and I know that this will be proven in a few days.”

Gatti’s funeral is to take place on Monday in Montreal.
