Author Diane Fanning slammed for writing Casey Anthony book 'Mommy's Little Girl'

Author Diane Fanning

True crime author, Diane Fanning, has been getting heated criticism for her new book entitled , “Mommy’s Little Girl: Casey Anthony and Her Daughter Caylee’s Tragic Fate.”

People have been contacting Fanning expressing their criticisms and unhappiness about her writing the book.

Hal Boedeker of the Orlando Sentinel reports the most frequent complaints the author has received.  First, Fanning has been told the book is premature since it was written prior to Casey’s murder trial. To that, Fanning said,

Maybe we shouldn’t have any news stories, either. If it’s wrong to do this, then it’s wrong to have newspaper stories, magazine stories and TV reports. You can’t wait on the vagaries of the justice system.”

Fanning noted when she agreed to write the book, Casey’s trial was set for Jan., then moved to March, and now may not occur until 2010.

There is a point in the public world when things get in place and you can’t stop that train. It was supposed to be a post-trial book. This case is so different. There is so much available. Will I write a sequel? It’s up to the publisher.”

The next criticism surrounds the Anthony’s profiting from the book. Fanning said,

A lot of people in the general public seem to believe to write a book like this, you have to purchase rights. Not true, it’s no more true of writers who work for newspapers. People make the assumption I put money in the Anthony’s pocket. It’s not true, and it’s not ethical. There were enough people to talk to. I could round out what was available from documentation.”

People are also criticizing the title of Fanning’s new book as being disrespectful to Caylee. Fanning responded,

Some people are upset by the title. I didn't pick the title, but I thought it was a good title. No matter how horrendous a mother might be, that child is always mommy's little girl. Children love without any limitation.”

Caylee Anthony

Some in the public are angry that Fanning will profit off Caylee’s tragedy. Fanning said,

I’m making a living. That’s it. This is what I do to get my paycheck. I write books. There are stories and anecdotes that have never been published before—not earth-shattering, but I think it adds another texture to the story.”

Fanning began writing the book the day after Casey was arrested in Oct., and finished it on May 15. She said that due to the number of documents made public in the case, the book was easier to write than others.  Fanning admitted she was not able to interview some of the key players in the case, such as George and Cindy Anthony.

   Cindy and George Anthony

According to the book’s description on Amazon.com, it contains “8 pages of alarming photographs” and is touted to be the “first full-length, in-depth account of the Caylee Anthony story.”  It is scheduled to be released by St. Martin’s Press on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 with a suggested retail price of $6.99.

Casey's trial is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 12, but legal analysts speculate it may not commence until sometime in 2010.

$6.99? I wouldn't even take a free copy! Why doesn't she just go spit on Casey's grave instead...or wait, that's right, the Anthonys had her placed in jewelry that they flaunt around their neck! I will tell everyone I know not to buy this garbage! She should of named the book, "Mommy's little snot nose" (is in the way).

You peeps slay me!!! Talk about judging a book by it's cover. Maybe you should just reserve judgment until after it is released. I know Diane's work, and if this book is anything like the other books she has written, it's sure to open many people's eyes. So quit the crap!!!

Maybe Dianne should have waited to complete the book after the trial. She most certainly did release this at a bad time and normally she is a good author of true crime novels. The story is probably a good one but I doubt most would go buy it now. After the trial begins, then the true story comes to light with all the details, not yet do we have the facts in other than Casey killed her own child. We know she did it, we just do not know for sure how or why or how she could have done this atrocious thing. I do not think anyone will ever get the whole truth from Casey, she forgot what truth was in infancy.

Diane Fanning...What a loser! You could not pay me to read this book. Unlike Diane and the Anthony's ,I will not give a penny towards this sick family who continue to try and make money off the dead granddaughter and you should be ashamed. Making money for the people who refuse to give this child an ounce of dignity and respected after her murder. I hope you wrote in your book how the grandparents (George, Cindy) did not want this child found. In fact did everything they could to throw the investigators off from finding out the truth of what happen to this child. This child was horribly murder at the hands of her mother...even her own parents know their daughter (Casey) murdered their granddaughter (Caylee)...It's all about the money for you and the Anthonys...What a shame this child deserved better than you people!!! I also know Diane Fannings work and it will provide dignity Caylee has not gotten so far. The assumptions made here are in error.
    1. This book is not being written in concert with the Anthony's. They were not & will not be paid for the story.
    2. Since the book is about the child, why should she have waited until after the trial? That would then be a book about Casey, not Caylee.
    3. To suggest that she would better have spit on Caylee's grave is mean spirited. I've read several of her books and the one constant in all is the high level of dignity she affords the victims in these true crimes.
    4. Yes, she's an author, as such makes her living writing. So what?
Please don't jump to conclusions. If you don't know something as fact, educate yourself before you make thoughtless comments.

I am fairly certain this little list does not represent the whole of true crime readership so these mis-characterizations are hardly going to hurt the sales.

I know Diane Fanning, too. She's a backbiting, bottom feeding, ambulance chasing, unethical liar who believes that the ends justify the means. She has also never met a high profile case she wasn't willing to exploit. When other true crime authors look for stories that have never been told Fanning goes for the ones where every ounce of life has already been sucked out of them. I can only assume that she is either a)lazy and requires others to do her work for her, or b)she is incapable of any actual investigative journalism (see A). Sure, she's making a living. However, like it or not, this book puts her in the same category with every other vampire out there who has used that little girl's death for their own financial gain. Fanning knows good and well the obsessed freaks will buy the book and she can get free publicity and promos from the fact that the news media can't stop talking about the case. Fanning is a disgrace to the genre.

There is no other conclusion to be drawn if this woman is writing a $6 dollar book about a case that has not been concluded. Who would by a book that's only source at this point is to regurgitate news articles, if the Anthony's aren't cooperating, then most of the people surrounding them aren't going to either. You can search online for whatever she's going to put together and if you go to look up blogs about the case you will get far more than she could ever come up with. This is a disgraceful effort and is being done to make money off that poor dead kid. I also believe that there is Caylee/Casey Anthony fatigue as well. It's a sad case but how many other young mother's have killed their children since Caylee's murder? Very many, so Diane is just getting her pound of flesh, which is pretty sickening. That poor kid has turned in to a cottage industry for the bottom feeders.

I'm all for anyone who gets the Anthony family angry - and of course they will be angry when they see someone ELSE making money off of their granddaughter's death. If this is about Caylee, a little girl that has no one to defend her - then go for it girl.... Cindy and George don't seem to care - only defending her murderer. This case has brought out a lot of slimeballs - why not one more.

Wow. I understand the right to have an opinion. But what is with all the name calling and judgment over here? As far as making money from this, look at all the reporters, and photographers who do get payed for this. They actually have battles over who can get what photo first! And guess how they decide what stories/ photos to print? It is based on what the general public would really like to see or read. The publishers of news papers, and even magazines always have been out to make more money than the other, and the strategy is to print what no one has. Ive heard national news channels say many times, "you saw it here first" . I do not understand all the judgment over here when each time you read the newspaper, or watch the news you are contributing to the situation that you are saying you are so against! As far as making the Anthonys angry, Im sure they have much more on their mind and have been through the media circus so much, one book out of the many to come, is not a concern.

There will be dozens of these books and the same people who are reading everything on the case for free are acting self-righteous about someone spending time and energy researching and writing the story for money. I hate to break it to the ignorants commenting here, but she is not paying the Anthony's. 'cant you read?
The only villains here are Mommy-Monster Casey Anthony, her enabling parents who created the monster, and the attorneys and experts trying to get the monster off.
Why kill the messenger? She is a writer who is writing. I suppose you morons think it is somehow noble to read about the tragedy as long as it's free?

The book is pure speculation and an attempt to cash in. Ann Rule doesn't write about popular cases particularly those which have not been to trial. How is Fanning going to say what happened to Caylee when she has not heard both sides of the case. Is she going to interview one of her psychic frauds or someone riding a van on the coatails of a ponzi scheme and take it as gospel? Tick Tock Fanning do your research and really look into it. A 7.00 book... pretty desperate aren't you for that paycheck. Your book is going to be laughable and will probably be sold on ebay. You, in my opinion are just writing the tabloid rag of trash in paperback form. Your associations are going to haunt you. I'd be careful whom I use as a source of information.

I'm sure there will be another book to follow.Part 2. The problem I have with the book is she couldn't even get the name of Ricardo Morales right. She calls him Rico throughout the book.I have the book and it just drives me crazy. If you're writing a book based on what others have said and a compilation of discovery at least she could get a name straight.

  • K.B. 1 year ago

Rico was a name Casey nicknamed him as a password on her computer and nothing more. She might have had Caylee call him that b/c she couldn't pronounce his whole name but to just hear her call him that throughout the book is annoying!Everyone knows who knows anything about this case that, that is not his name.I'd rather read this book than any book the Anthony's would ever write. It would be full of lies! So, I would buy the sequel at least Caylee deserves some truth coming out. This is in addition to the part below.

I read the Diane's book and found it unbiased. All she did was compile all public records, police reports, interviews (she disclosed that she didn't interview Casey, Lee, Cindy or George) as well as transcripts from the interrogations and jail video visits. She didn't offer an opinion as to whether Casey is innocent or guilty. I'm glad I read it prior to the trial which I am following closely.
