The US Department of Justice's civil rights division announced yesterday that it is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting death of the controversial Imam during an October 28 FBI raid on a Dearborn warehouse.
The mission of the FBI that day had been to arrest Luqman A. Abdullah and ten of his followers based on a federal complaint alleging that the defendants were dealing in stolen property. Yet Abdullah died in a storm of bullets after shooting an FBI canine. Calls for an independent investigation arose almost immediately from Islamic and civil rights groups, and were endorsed by Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.
The USDOJ announcement follows hard on the heels of Monday's release of Abdullah's autopsy report that revealed the Imam had been shot 21 times. It also coincides with a press conference yesterday morning in which Rep. John Conyers called for an investigation into the incident. Conyers, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, said: "On the surface, someone being shot 21 times raises quite a few questions in the criminal justice system."
The DOJ claims the investigation is "routine" and prompted mainly by receipt of the FBI's own investigative report, the contents of which have not been made public, rather than anything said by Conyers. But the autopsy report can not be discounted as a factor.
The report included input by the Medical Examiner's investigator, who arrived on the scene to find Abdullah's dead body on the floor of a semi-trailer full of video monitors, hancuffed behind his back. FBI agents told the investigator that when agents arrived, they asked to see Abdullah's hands and threatened to send a canine in if he didn't cooperate. Agents said they opened fire when Abdullah shot the dog.
Dawud Walid of CAIR thinks the video feed to agency monitors may have been from cameras installed by the FBI prior to the raid, and may show the shooting. He has asked for videotapes through the Freedom of Information Act.
Abdullah's wife says lacerations to the Imam's hands may show he was attacked by the dog before shooting it. A dog attack would have offended a Muslim, who consider dogs unclean. Amian Abdullah, the Imam's wife of ten years, appeared with Conyers at his press conference. She claimed that the FBI is trying to have her deported to Tanzania.
"All we want is simple fairness," Conyers said.
An independent investigation into the shooting is also being conducted by the Dearborn Police Department.

The good news is that the criminal is dead. Had he not been involved with illegal practices, the feds never would have come to his warehouse. Or perhaps had he done what he was told, maybe the dog wouldn't have come into play. Also, I dont see many catholic priests carrying around weapons.

As usual, the muslim posting here ignores the facts like this HOLY LEADER had an arsenal AND a truck load of video monitors? What was he doing with the weapons and such? I am not racist...I have no issues with African Americans. I have an issue with muslims who carry around automatic weapons and refuse to listen to authority. If the feds came to my door and I shot their dog, Id be dead too.
Ok, there are several things wrong here. First, If you have never been confronted by a guy shooting at you, you have no room to talk about how many rounds were fired. 2nd, if multiple FBI agents fired each only firing 4 or 5 rounds which takes less than a second, it is reasonable. 3rd, if he had complied with their commands he would not have been shot! and 4th, sorry if you don't think dogs are clean but you are not in your country. here we use dogs. We like dogs. Oh and we speak english.
