At about 3 AM Friday morning, DPD officers responded to a shooting at a Sunoco station at the corner of W. Chicago and the Southfield freeway. They discovered a 35 year old man who had been shot to death. and more than 16 bullet casings on the station's pavement. They also learned that a vehicle had quickly left the scene following the shooting, entering the Southfield freeway.
Only minutes later, the Michigan State Police Detroit Unit was called to a two car accident scene at the Southfield and Grand River. A man in one of the vehicles had a gunshot wound.
"There was a wounded man inside the vehicle," said MSP Sgt Nate McQueen. "There had also been a shooting in Detroit and he may have been part of the shooting. Detroit police arrived at the scene and took over the investigation."
The man told police he had been shot during a fight outside a night club, and his female companion was driving him to the hospital when the accident occurred. Neither sustained injuries as a result of the crash, but the stricken man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he is presently listed in critical condition.
The DPD thinks the wounded man was involved in the gas station shooting, but don't know whether he was a perpetrator or a victim. So far, no arrests have been made.
DPD forensic units and homicide detectives continue their investigation of the crime scene.
