When 8th precinct police questioned a man in the Splash Bar and Grill parking lot about gunshots they had heard, the odor of marijuana led them to search his car. They discovered 5 kilos of cocaine on the front seat. The driver, Lawrence Martin of Ypsilanti, was arrested and has been arraigned in 36th District Court on a charge of delivery of greater than 650 grams of a controlled substance.
Yet the police did not stop there. They brought in low tech devices, namely drug-sniffing canines, to check out other vehicles in he parking lot, having two of them towed after the dogs scored hits. Then, armed with search warrants, they found 14 kilos of dope in one car and a quarter-million dollars cash in the other. The Splash parking lot, it would seem, had become a veritable Gibralter Trade Center for dope transactions.
Police believe the seizures are related to the initial bust Saturday morming. It remains now for the cops to round up the owners of the two towed vehicles.
It is rare, police say, to recover such a quantity of drugs absent an inter-agency investigation.
