What Scott Lee Cohen should have known before he visited a spa with history of prostitution

So, you're thinking about running for Lt. Governor of Illinois some day and you don't want to make the same mistake Scott Lee Cohen did by getting a massage at a spa, from a woman with an arrest record for prostitution, whom he later invited to live with him, and who later told police he put a knife to her throat during an argument.

Wow. That's a mouthful.

So how can you tell the massage you're getting comes from a professional masseuse and not a sex worker?

Let's start with the title of the business. Spa in the title typically does not indicate a professional licensed massage therapy business.  So, for example, the title of spa Cohen visited in 2005, the "Eden Spa" in Glenview, should have been a clue.  After all, wasn't Eden where Eve tempted Adam with the apple? And you know how that turned out.

Location is another good indicator. Spas with sex on the list of services tend to locate in out of the way places or unincorporated areas where they don't draw too much attention from law abiding, church-going citizens and local law enforcement.

So, let's say you miss these clues and you find yourself in the "Nasty Girl Spa" some two miles outside city limits. The spa is nestled between a pawnshop and a liquor store that has condoms and rolling papers displayed by the front register and some fruity incense burning in the backroom. You don't want to prejudge, so you walk into the spa anyway looking for a therapeutic rubdown.

First, look for a license on the wall. All legal businesses should have a license displayed where customers can read it and it should state the business for which the establishment is licensed.

Next, notice what the employees are wearing. Are they in the standard medical professional smocks with name tags like Marilyn, Elizabeth or Robert? Or are they in negligees that don't have enough material on which to pin a name tag and they instead introduce themselves as Sunshine, Candy or Lola?

By now, the true nature of the business should be apparent.

Of course, there are variations on these details, but licensed massage professionals work very hard to make it clear their business is legit. They have the professional degrees, demeanor, licenses and respected clientele to prove it.

Glenview Police Chief Jeff Ader said in a phone interview it was pretty obvious what was going on at the Eden Spa in 2005, which is when Scott Lee Cohen made his now infamous visit. Ader said community members complained about the place and his officers made multiple arrests there before they were finally able to get the spa closed down on a license violation.

It is possible Cohen wasn't aware of the spa's reputation or the arrest record of  Amanda Eneman, his sexy masseuse and soon-to-be girlfriend. It's also possible he missed the telltale signs that this wasn't a therapeutic clinic that accepts BlueCross BlueShield. After all, this is a pawnshop owner with no political experience who thought he had a chance to become the democratic nominee for the lieutenant governor of Illinois - talk about naive.

Who cares what Scott Lee cohen does in his private life. What Americans care about is getting people Jobs again. Every person on this planet has lied or done something that was a bad Judgement at one time. But learning from your mistakes is what life is all about. Im sure that if we investigated Deborah who wrote this negative article we would find something on her to. But the facts are Scott Lee Cohen put 300 people to work with his job fairs while he was spending his own money and puting his laundry on the line. Im sorry but this guy has character. I am voting for Scott Lee Cohen

Very well weritten! and yes the private life of a public official does matter. Why should I let a person with no morals have influence over the decisions needed to make over my life? Yes, we've all made mistakes but that's not a good enouch excuse to allow just any ole body rule over the good of the people because past actions show their ability or inability to make wise decisions.

Don't cast stones unless you are perfect, which no one is! This man won the election by voters and the story that is being brought to the attention of everyone was published over a year ago and no one said anything.

Come down off your high horse, as I recall you, and a majority of voters, elected a man into the highest office in the land who point blank described that he had partied and taken illegal drugs in his youth and no one seemed to have a problems with that.

    Just win Scott, just win!

This story suggests that Scott Lee Cohen would have been in fine shape - if only he had used the SPA at the Peninsula Hotel - and if his massage therapist had and plaque on the wall (even if, unknown to him, she was really a $1000 an hour call girl on the side).

What a bunch of elitist claptrap! I am really looking forward to getting to vote for a regular guy who has made good - even if he had a rough couple of years along the way - who hasnt!

The sanctimonious preaching from the puritan media has really become tiresome. Ditto for all the little church ladies who just love to sit in judgment over Cohen's past actions. The key word is PAST.

IMO Cohen is a refreshing change over the nasty crooks that have overrun Illinois politics for decades. So I, too, am voting for Mr. Cohen in November. Please Mr. Cohen DO NOT drop out.

In the spirit of due diligence as a voter, I would like to ask the political media to compile and publish a list of all current elected officials and candidates who: 1) have ever been divorced, 2) who have ever been arrested for anything, regardless of the outcomes. Also include everything about any time they have had a problem of any sort with the IRS, again, regardless of the outcomes. Please list the nature and timing of each arrest and interview - and the outcomes to all. Please locate and publish every court document in everyone of their divorces or other court appearances. As a follow-up, please interview all of the their spouses, ex-spouses and ex-girlfriends.

This is the standard and precedent your political reporting profession has just set for us - and I plan to hold you to it. As an dedicated and deeply concerned Illinois voter, I want to know all of this about every candidate, before I will vote for any of them from now on.

I find it funny that everyone focuses on candidates more for their entertainment value than what their principal job is. The state of Illinois has been in the toliet for the past 25 years due to politicians that appear squeaky clean, but in reality had the means to "bury" their problems. Cohen is a businessman with his own money and certainly doesn't need to steal and cheat which is more than I can say for the past few governors. If the only thing they can find on Cohen is that he used steroids and perhaps an instance with some ex-hooker, than I would say hurray for Cohen. I have had the chance to meet with Cohen on a few occasions. Granted he is not a lawyer, or a career politician, but he speaks from the heart and his lines are not rehearsed. We have nothing to lose by electing this guy and giving him a 4 year run. He certainly cannot do any worse than the previous idiots that we've elected. Get real.
