Four people are in custody and another 2 - 3 people are expected to be arrested later today for helping accused cop killer Maurice Clemmons elude authorities for two days.

During a news conference just broadcast live on KING-TV,  Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said among those in custody is the person who drove a getaway car for Clemmons.

Clemmons was shot and killed by a Seattle police officer at about 2:45 this morning.

Seattle Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel told reporters a patrol officer saw  a car on a south Seattle street that had been reported stolen. As he was calling in information on the car, the officer said Clemmons approached him from behind. Pugel says the officer recognized Clemmons and ordered him to show his hands. Clemmons would not show his hands and allegedly began running around the stolen car, at which point the officer fired several shots, killing Clemmons.

Authorities say Clemmons did not shoot at the officer. However, he was in possession of a gun stolen from one of the four police officers he allegedly killed Sunday.

A manhunt had been underway for Clemmons since Sunday when police say he walked into a coffee shop in Parkland, Washington and shot to death four uniformed officers from the Lakewood police department.

One of the dying officers shot Clemmons in the abdomen and he was seriously wounded.

Troyer said Clemmons' family and friends gave him first aid, money and a cell phone. He said they also made arrangements for him to get of of Washington state. He said  they did whatever they could to "throw wrenches" into the investigation by giving "misdirections" to investigators.

"They will pay for it," said Troyer.

Early yesterday, police spent nearly 11 hours outside a home in in Seattle thinking they had Clemmons cornered inside. It turned out he wasn't there. It is not clear whether police were acting on false information from one of the people who was allegedly trying to help Clemmons.
