Murder suspect kills himself after police standoff in Logan Square

A man accused of stalking and killing his ex-girlfriend in Colorado took his own life after a police standoff in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Police said that on Tuesday night in Colorado, 35-year-old James Martin followed his ex-girlfriend, 34-year-old Amber Cremeens, after she left the gym. When she realized that he was following her, she called her current boyfriend. He then called 911, and tried to help her drive to safety. However it appears that Martin was able to run Cremeens off the road, and then fatally shoot her. Police believe that Martin left for the Chicago area, where he was found by Chicago police on Friday.  Chicago police attempted to pull over Martin near the intersection of Fullerton and Kimball, but Martin fled from the car, dropped one of the three guns that he was carrying, and barricaded himself in a building on the 2300 block of North Kimball Avenue.  Police attempted to communicate with Martin, however he ignored their attempts and fatally shot himself at about 7:15 PM on Friday.

As I've said before, domestic violence is a blight in our society, whether it takes place in Colorado or Chicago.  I think that the only way we can stop such violence towards women is to impress upon every member of society that stalking and violence are not just illegal, but are the actions of a coward.  I also think that we may need to make it easier for such stalking victims to defend themselves, so that they don't end up like Amber Cremeens.
