A 17-year-old Indiana boy accused of murdering his 10-year-old brother will be using the insanity defense.
Indystar.com reports Andrew Conley's attorney made that clear during a court hearing yesterday in which Conley's trial date was set for May 3.
Conley admitted he strangled his 10-year-old brother in the tourism town of Rising Sun, Indiana, in early December. Prosecutors say Conley told them he had fantasized about committing murder for several years and he likened himself to "Dexter", a serial killer TV character.
The murder is one of the more disturbing cases in the area recently. It stunned the region as details emerged about the cold and calculating way Andrew killed his little brother, disposed of the body, and then went to visit his girlfriend and give her a "sweetheart" ring.
Both the Conley boys were good students and townspeople interviewed after the murder said there were no signs Andrew was capable of inflicting such horror on his family. The question everyone had was "why"?
Insanity is as plausible an explanation as anything else. The court has assigned two doctors and a psychologist to evaluate Conley.
