It's unclear what made a Fulton County jailer hit an handcuffed inmate with a milk crate, but she will spend at least three months in a federal prison for the crime.

Ms. Denita Renae Shaw, 41, of Smyrna was sentenced Thursday in Atlanta's federal court on a felony charge of violating the civil rights of an inmate by using excessive force while she was a detention officer, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"This officer violated the Constitution and her oath of office when she assaulted an handcuffed inmate," U. S. Attorney Mrs. Sally Quillian Yates said. "For this reprehensible conduct, she will now walk in the shoes of her victim by becoming an inmate herself."

On Jan. 26, 2009, Ms. Shaw hit the handcuffed inmate with the milk crate at the Fulton County Jail and was terminated as a result of the incident, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

It's unclear where she hit the inmate and what type of injury she caused, if any, when she used the milk crate- a square or rectangular interlocking box made out of heavy-duty plastic.

Ms. Shaw pleaded guilty to the charge on Feb. 17, officials said.

She was sentenced to three months in prison, and three months of home confinement to be followed by three years of supervised release, the press release continued.

She also has to perform 120 hours of community service.
