Previewing Champions Trophy 2009: SWOT Analysis of Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the teams which has yet to win in the Champions Trophy. Incidentally, they have yet to get to the finals of any of the tournaments. But having won the ICC World T20 this year, they will look to continue with the World Cup winning form.

Strengths:

Pakistan’s biggest strength is their young-looking side, which is also interspersed with many an all-rounders. So while the likes of Umar Akmal, Imran Nazir and Fawad Alam will lead the young brigade, it is the presence of Alam, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Naved-ul-Hasan Rana who will double up as batsmen who can bowl and vice-versa. With such a strong middle-order, Pakistan could be the team to watch out for despite their performances in the recent past.

Weaknesses:

What Pakistan possesses in talent more than compensates for their lack of cohesiveness and in-fighting. They have now lost two successive ODI series – to Sri Lanka and Australia – and have also been hit by allegations that some of the players had been approached by illegal bookmakers. With a lot of fingers being pointed against the captain, it remains to be seen whether they can comeback strongly.

Opportunities:

Mohammad Asif’s return to the side is the biggest opportunity for Pakistan to surprise the opposition with his swing and seam on South African pitches. The side also possess others like Mohammad Aamer and Rana, who have the potential to make best use of the tracks in South Africa and get the ball to move around.

Threats:

The inability of the batsmen to be able to handle the pressure was very evident throughout the series against Sri Lanka. This could repeat itself in the Champions Trophy, as could the continuing lack of form for the seniors, including Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq and Shoaib Malik.
