The oldest record of cricket as a sport is found to date back to the 16th century.
But in the USA, it was first played in the 17th century.
The sport has even older roots in the country than baseball, and the chief reason for that is its proliferation in the country thanks to some of the English travellers who came to the USA.
Officially though, the first written record of the game to be played in the States, was found to be in 1709, thanks to the William Byrd diaries (read more about the man himself and his general eccentricities!)
It soon became a sport that was well received in the country, first played by the British in the country and then slowly, by the locals themselves.
What led to the popularity of the sport within USA, was the American Revolution which had many of the soldiers playing it during most of their free time. John Adams, the second President of the USA made a mention of the sport as a comparison with the title, ‘President’!
