Even as the Kolkata Knight Riders crashed from one defeat to another in the second edition of the Indian Premier League in 2009, there was a mixture of comic relief and controversy provided by a blogger, who called himself the ‘Fake IPL Player’.
Christening himself as one of the players of the Knight Riders’ team, he made merry with his blogging and created a ruckus by using pseudo-names for the various players in the Kolkata team.
He did not get a lot of eye-balls to begin with but when the side began to tumble from one defeat to another, his posts began to get spicier by the day. He named the owner of the side as Dildo, and had funny-sounding and sometimes downright derogatory nick-names for each of his team players and some of the others as well.
Some of the stuff that went on his blog, was clearly not meant for family audiences, as he described in gory details the sordid affairs that some of the team-members had.
Many speculated about the true identity of the Fake IPL Player, with some calling it a marketing gimmick of the owner, Shah Rukh Khan, while others thought about him as a journalist who was covering the IPL in South Africa with insider information of the Kolkata team.
Some thought it was a player like Akash Chopra, who is also a cricket writer in his free time. But even after Chopra was sent back from the tournament – supposedly for his slow batting – the posts continued to be as engrossing as before. Many different websites spawned up various thoughts about the actual identity, but even till now there hasn’t been a true picture.
The blogger himself had asked the readers whether they wanted him to reveal his identity, to which the poll on his blog said an overwhelming yes.
The blogger also claimed that he would retire from blogging at the end of the IPL, but came to write during India’s dismal campaign in the ICC World T20. By then, his popularity had gone down quite a bit!
