All-time great batsmen - Sachin Tendulkar. So good he can stop a train.

Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar.

Revered by Indians and many other fans the world over as the god of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar burst on to the scene at an age of a little less than 16 years.

On his very first tour – to Pakistan – Sachin Tendulkar exhibited the kind of mettle that can best be associated with someone with loads of experience; batting against a hostile attack that would send shivers down the spine of the best with their sheer pace, a 16-year old Tendulkar was hit in the face by a bouncer. Spitting the blood out, and not wanting to leave the playing field, Tendulkar smashed a rasping half century to leave his mark.

Almost twenty years later, he is still very much a part of the Indian cricket team, having won many an accolade, snatched man-of-the-match awards and most importantly, being termed as the closest there is to Don Bradman, Tendulkar has more than 12000 runs in tests and many more in the shorter format of the game.

Often blamed for not being a good finisher, Tendulkar scored a hundred in an ODI chase against Australia in a triangular series final in 2008 to nail it for his team and win the Player-of-the-Match award.

He is often referred to as one of the four pillars of contemporary Indian cricket, along with Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

However, it must be said that his two stints as the captain of the national side were mired in some of India’s worst performances and he finally quit the role in 2000 to never lead the side again. Since then, he has had the opportunity to lead his IPL side, Mumbai Indians, but fared no better even there as his side did not qualify for the knock-out stage in both the editions.

The story goes that once when Sachin was approaching the century mark, the conductors delayed the start of the train in order to watch...and nobody on the train complained!
