The four-time Grammy winner returned to Charlotte to play at the Belk Theatre at the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center for “An Evening with Lyle Lovett and His Large Band” on November 17. The group entertained a fairly packed audience with an eclectic array of music styles ranging from country to folk and from pop to big-band swing with a little rock and roll thrown in as well.
In his signature deadpan, Lovett wisecracked throughout the evening about being from a musician from Texas, usually to the audience’s delight. He sang his typical country heartbreakers, such as "Nobody Knows Me" but kept things light with his wiseacre songs like "If I Had A Boat," “Keep it in Your Pantry” and "That's Right (You're Not From Texas").
If you like good music, you can’t help but love Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. One of the most revered musicians of his time, Lovett offers his melodic wares with a refreshing “take it as it comes flair.” There are no loud or flashy costumes. The ten-piece band and Lovett perform incredible riffs and solos in gray suits as if to say, “It’s not about us, it’s about the music.”
Starting out in 1986 under the billing of a country artist, Lovett found a following for his unique blend of music styles with hits that include "South Texas Girl," "In My Own Mind" and "Give Back My Heart." His newest release, Natural Forces, offers the same bluesy, country-rock spiced with gospel, big-band swing and jazz that he’s known for.
