Regional microbreweries: 6 Row Brewing Company

It was a quiet opening just before the hectic holidays last year, but an opening nonetheless. As of December 5th, Six Row Brewing Company, located in Falstaff Corp.'s old digs at 3690 Forest Park Ave, near St. Louis University, started serving beer. President Mike Rami and brewmaster Evan Hiatt join four other partners in the hopes of adding another brewery to the ever-growing list of brewers in St. Louis.

With the great pub-like atmosphere and the high quality beers on tap as a first offering, they've made a significant step forward.

Six Row's brick exterior and old-fashioned pub chairs inside give it a warm, comfortable charm. The copper brewing equipment is displayed behind glass in the dining room and a beautiful old stained glass window from the Falstaff days greet you over the entryway. It's just the kind of place you want to go to after work, or to grab a brew while you watch a game.

And how are the beers?

Excellent. The kolsch was crisp and clear, the extra pale ale was another crisp and hoppy number, rivaling O'Fallon's 5-Day for best hoppy beer in the city. The ESB was a very good take on the classic British beer, with just the right level of carbonation (very little). The porter was a big hit in our crowd, as was the Whale, which, I must say, though strange at first, grew on me. It was similar to the Honey Weizen in fruitiness, but had a bit more funk in the trunk. And, while I'm not usually a fan of beers brewed with honey, the Honey Weizen was perfectly understated and subtle.

Great first offerings that bode well for this brand new brewery. I look forward to seeing what they'll be brewing a year from now. The owners have plans to bottle their beer and sell it retail. Food is also a distant hope, but for now, pizza is "imported" from Di Gregorio's on the Hill, and there are other salty bar snacks for your eating pleasure.

Brace yourselves for the grand opening this May, should be a great event for beer in St. Louis.

I'm curious about the name; I'm a beginning homebrewer, and know that most homebrewers use two-row barley. I've got a batch of 6-row, and am learning about brewing with it. Just wondered if they shared info about their brewing with 6-row malted barley?

    Hi Jennifer,

You're right about the 2-row/6-row barley. The guys at 6-Row do brew with 6-row barley, and they picked the name both for that reason, and for the fact that it represented the six of them as a team. Good luck with your brew if you go with the 6-row, I'd love to know how it turns out! Cheers.
