My Aunt Terri created this Chocolate Stout Cake! Yes, it's a cake
Recently, a story in The New York Times picked up on The Session--a monthly exercise for the geekiest of beer bloggers--wherein the subject was beer cocktails courtesy of Joe Ruvel. Now, thanks to David Jensen at Beer 47, the topic turns to beer deserts.
Just the other day, I hosted a dinner where every dish was cooked with, and paired with beer. For dessert, I made this fantastic sounding Vanilla Bean Tripel Pot de Creme, devised by Sean Paxton the Homebrew Chef. Incidentally, it tasted twice as good as it sounded. (When he says scrape out every speckle of vanilla, you scrape. When he says reduce your beer of choice over low heat til it measures in the tablespoons, you reduce.)
A smattering of Bay Area brewerpubs, taverns, and more offer tasty morsels that don't just pair well with beer, but include beer among the ingredients.
- Magnolia Pub offers a Beer Sundae made with Bi-Rite ice cream, caramel, and toffee bits afloat in a proprietary brew, "Out with the Old Ale."
- North Coast Brewery up in Fort Bragg offers both a chocolate brownie made with their delectable Old Rasputin Imperial Russian Stout and Old 38 Stout ice cream. Can't decide which one to order? Do as I did and order the brownie a la mode!
- Halfway between Ft. Bragg and The City in Sebastopol you'll find Hopmonk Tavern, where they also deploy Old 38 Stout, this time in their Crème Brulee. Their Florentine Ice Cream Sandwich, however, is topped with a stout reduction.
- Don't like chocolate and don't like leaving The City? Hurry and head over to Humphry Slocombe where this new creamery known for its re-imaginative flavors is offering Watermelon Wheat Ice Cream, using 21st Amendment's Hell or High Watermelon Wheat, originally created for a recent installment of Mission Street Food.

Let's not forget the easiest dessert of all: A good sweet, thick stout as a topping for a dish of ice cream.
And for the less classy, there is always beer jello: 1 package strawberry Jell-O, 12 oz water, 12 oz malt liquor. Add some cool whip and a graham cracker crust and you've got a dessert that would make many an American proud.
I like this trend! Wow - that cake looks amazing.
I love this! Capital Brewery publishes a few really good recipes using beer- like Blonde Doppelbock Cheesecake, and even stout beer mousse. Unfortunately, all my friends were grossed out by my making of the beer cheesecake (I loved it, as did several beer afficionados). Sob...
