When you think of Pittsburgh Steelers football, visions of frigid temperatures, Terrible Towels, rock solid defense and Iron City will come to mind and after a recent trip to Heinz Field you can now add craft beer to that list. That is, if you’re willing to walk and miss part of the game.
Heinz Field opened in 2001 as the new home of the Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Panthers but since then amenities have been in a time freeze. If you want the good beer (or really anything from a concession stand) you need to hit one of the few ATMs around the stadium because they won’t take credit/debit cards. With no signs stating this you could end up in line only to be instructed to wait in an even longer line.
You’re going to find your macro standards with Yuengling tossed in but if you want good beer make your way to Hero’s Pub behind section 128. Standard pours of macros and Sam Adams drafts will run you $7.25 for 16 ounces and $7.75 brings you one of many craft beer selections in a 12 ounce bottle.
The lack of good beer stands are made up for by the selection. Sam Adams seasonal is on draft and in the cooler you’ll find treats such as Harpoon IPA, various Church Brew Works, Penn Brewery and Sierra Nevada products, Anchor Steam, Abita Purple Haze, Woodchuck Cider, and a hearty variety of Great Lakes lineup.
This is your only option and unfortunately if you’re sitting in the low 100 sections you better have your walking shoes on as 128 is in the wedge of the horseshoe bend that will require you to walk multiple ramps. Consider buying 2, it’s a long walk back.
