Do you lament losing the sense of community character we once had when most of our businesses were all "mom and pop" stores, when these businesses defined our local character and we all had a sense of community? Well, how about doing something about it. These small businesses were once the backbone of America and they used locally produced raw materials to produce a product that was chosen because that's what you asked for or what you wanted.

So what can you do?   Well, you can support your local crawfish farmers and fishermen, your local cane farmers and workers, your local gift shop instead of Walmart, you can keep your tax dollars in the community that you call your home.

One of these small businesses that is striving to produce a product made with locally grown ingredients is Parish Brewing Company. Parish Brewing Company is in the final stages of opening its doors and should be selling their first beer in the summer of 2010. What makes Parish Brewing so unique is that Andrew Godley, brewer and owner, uses only Louisiana grown sugar cane in his beers. Plus, all of Parish Brewing's beers are unpasteurized and unfiltered to provide you with the freshest product available. Parish Brewing Company will be located right here in Broussard, LA. Andrew plans on offering his friends and neighbors another choice of beer, a craft beer that reflects the local culture, one that's made just for you.

Parish Brewing Company's flagship beers all reflect the French influence and distinct Cajun heritage of our unique part of the country. Take for example Parish Canebrake, a truly unique craft beer made with Louisiana sugar cane, or the Parish Biere Blanc, a Louisiana Pale Ale everyone has been asking for, and the Parish Envie (pronounced "on-vee"), a beer designed to go perfectly with your next crawfish, crab or shrimp boil. If your favorite beer is Bud Light, Miller Lite or Coors Light, how about trying a beer made right here in Acadiana, with products produced right here in Acadiana, and designed for the unique people of Acadiana?

Next time you are drinking your beer, look on the label and see where it is made and by whom. Keep your tax dollars in Acadiana and help your small businesses compete against the corporate giants that dictate what products you get to choose from. Don't let those beer commercials fool you into thinking it's cool to drink one of their beers. It's cool to drink Louisiana craft beer; it will be cool to drink Parish Brewing Company's beer. Support your local brewery, because they are supporting you. (climbing down from soapbox now)
