A newly released book titled "Great American Craft Beer: A Guide to the Nation's Finest Beers and Breweries" (Running Press, $22.95) by Andy Crouch mentions three Northeast Ohio breweries. Out of a roughly 1600 breweries and maybe 10,000 or so different beers produced in the U.S., Crouch has chosen about 350 beers to profile and about 25 great American beer bars. Cleveland's Great Lakes Brewing Co gets a mention for three of its brews: Dortmunder Gold, Glockenspiel Weizenbock, and Eliot Ness Vienna Lager.
Akron's Hoppin' Frog gets kudos for its B.O.R.I.S. the Crusher Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout, as one of the nation's best imperial stouts, and Willoughby Brewing Co. gets kudos for its Railway Razz Wheat Ale. The author acknowledges that the winnowing process was daunting and he may have left "a substantial number of excellent brewers out in the cold." So, although your favorite brewer/brewery may not be mentioned, you'll find it interesting reading, and it will give you some ideas for beers to try that perhaps you have not heard of or tasted before.
