The Maryland Catholic Conference is the lobbying arm of the Catholic Church in the Maryland region. Per its website, it describes itself:
“The Maryland Catholic Conference advocates for the Church's public policy positions before the Maryland General Assembly and other civil officials. The Conference represents all three dioceses with territory in the state - the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the Archdiocese of Washington, and the Diocese of Wilmington - and is directed by a Board of Governors that includes all of Maryland's bishops.”
I have been getting reports from many people telling me about postings in their Catholic church’s bulletins regarding the Dream Act. For back info on the Dream Act, click here and here and here. Below is a posting from a Baltimore County Catholic church bulletin this week, which is a shortened version of what is on the MCC website:
“College Tuition Equity for Immigrant Teens - Oppose the petition drive: The Catholic Church has long advocated for legislation which the Maryland General Assembly finally passed this year to provide in-state college tuition to Maryland’s immigrant children. These students must apply at first to community colleges, which have open enrollments; eligible students may apply in two years to state universities at the in-state tuition rate. Their seat may not be counted among the seats the University of Maryland system is required to reserve for resident students. Regrettably, there is an effort to petition the law to a statewide referendum, which will have a needlessly divisive impact on our state. The Maryland Catholic Conference urges Catholics to refrain from signing on to this petition effort.”
According to the pastor, the parishes received a letter dated May 10 from Archbishop O’Brien urging them to disseminate the statement. He said, “When you receive a request from the Archbishop, you normally do it.” This parish also has a weekly mass in Spanish, which has an average attendance of 175, according to the pastor.
Liberalism has methodically infiltrated almost every institution in American life, including government, education, the courts, news media, entertainment, private industry, marriage and parenting, science and research, and our religious institutions. On one hand they demonize the “religious right”, while on the other they set up the infrastructure to overtake it.
I don’t intend for this article to be a discussion of separation of church and state, which I believe to be bogus. This is a discussion of the specific position of the Maryland Catholic Conference. Please keep comments on topic.
