Similarities between Obama's health care plan and gun control

socialized health care, illegal immigration

President Obama’s health care plan shares something in common with the liberals’ gun control movement. Both impose mandates on all Americans, but both cannot enforce that mandate on those who break our laws.

The liberals’ gun control movement wants to remove gun ownership from all Americans in an effort to reduce guns in the hands of criminals. However, the irony is that those who choose to violate our laws will ignore this legislation as they do other laws, and therefore be the only ones who still enjoy the right to bear arms.

Likewise, President Obama justifies his health care plan by saying the health care costs of the uninsured are unfairly borne by the rest of Americans. He wants to provide and require health insurance coverage on all Americans. A large part of the costs of the uninsured are from illegal aliens and their children. However, illegal aliens who break our immigration laws will be outside the reaches of his legislation. You cannot enforce American laws on citizens of other countries. These are the same persons who flood our emergency rooms with routine care needs and walk away without paying the bill. Obama’s plan may very well make coverage accessible to illegals, but not have the teeth to require it of them.

The end result would be that American citizens are forced into a system of socialized health care in order to control costs, but illegals would still have the option of a free ride at our emergency rooms.

Well said Ann! If we could just get the second amendment declared as a "fundemental right", a lot of this foolishness would go away. Sorry had to sign it "incognito" never know who is watching.......lol

I will not be FORCED into ANY system that my 2 Senators and 1 Congressman are NOT FORCED INTO!

    Hows that sound?

How can the leader of the free world stand before the American people and tell us how he will come to our aid and provide us with a health insurance plan the "will save you up to $2500" and provide "better" coverage and at the same time brag about how he has the best plan money can buy, but he is NOT GOING TO SUBJECT HIS FAMILY TO THE SAME plan that is so damn good for the rest of us. That is tyranny. That cannot stand. That is an act of war by 535 against 300,000,000.

IT IS Al. It is as fundamental as the right to the pursuit of happiness and the right to freedom of speech.

Well put. Taking guns away from law abiding citizens wont reduce crime, but instead it will increase because the criminals who aren't supposed to have the guns in the first place will be the only ones with guns and will be free to do what they please. Doesnt take a genius to figure that one out!

My newspaper this morning said that the new health care regime would require all Americans to carry health insurance, just like all drivers in my state are all required to carry auto insurance. If that works, why am I also required to carry "uninsured motorist coverage" to cover me if the other driver is not insured? For example, how are we going to "require" the estimated 12 million illegal aliens (Oops, my bad! Change that to undocumented workers.) to carry the "required" medical insurance? So how much is the "uninsured sick person" coverage on my mandatory health coverage going to cost me?

You're all crazy. Gun violence is a significant contributor to health care costs. Guns do not make us safer.

This issue has nothing to do with rights; it has to do with the gun industry making money through murder. You're all pawns in the deadly game.

    And someone shows their ignorance.

Guns are only dangerous when in dangerous hands. The problem is the innocent, law-abiding citizens that enjoy using guns for sport are the ones who suffer from gun control laws. The criminals who should not have guns in the first place are the ones that need stricter laws. Enough of this slapping them on the wrist and telling them not to do it again. Make an example of them! Other countries with gun restrictions have just as much crime and violence as the US, but in those countries they have no way of defending themselves and so the criminal has control.

If you want to live in a 'controled' country, move to China, but as for me I want to live in the land of the FREE!

Motorcycles are a significant contributor to healthcare costs, but no one is asking to outlaw them. Lets be realistic.

And smoking... And the list could go on forever.

Motorcycles and smoking are both more tightly controlled than guns. If you think the NRA nuts are making you more free, you're nuts. They are holding us hostage through a sick worldview of fear and violence. The only problem with the USA are people who stand behind the second amendment to justify their violence.

"rjjv says: You're all crazy. Gun violence is a significant contributor to health care costs. Guns do not make us safer."

Uh rjjv, I know MANY MANY people who own firearms and use them at least monthly and have been for 30 years. I have used a firearm at least 500 times.

NONE of the above has cost YOU, the government, or themselves a dime in health care costs. NOT A DIME.

I know at least 6 people who have SAVED themselves or others from medical bills.

Don't spew your crap about all firearms!

IT IS NOT THE FIREARM. IT is the thug animal holding them who PULL THE TRIGGER.

You are right "Gun violence is a significant contributor to health care costs".

But it cost YOU AND ME not the thugs with bullets in their heads! They don't pay taxes. They leech on those who do. YOU AND ME.

I ride a motorcycle too and you are flat out wrong. It is easy for me to buy a MC and I do not need an FBI background check and wait 7 days. I don't need to take a test or watch a 15

Thanks to you, Ann, for a fine article. And ditto to AIR. One day soon, hopefully, the Supreme Court will affirm that the Second Amendment as a "fundamental right" to all American citizens, just like the freedom of speech, religeon, etc. and therefor cannot be "regulated" read that "denied" to Americans by businesses, companies, cities, counties, states, or any one else for ANY reason, especially for the bald faced lie that such "reasonable" and "common sense" laws and regulations are "necessary" for the "safety" and "protection" of those same citizens.

The GOVERNMENT is more guilty of murder than any decent gun owner. Witness the drug laws they hold so dearly which ENSURE that there will be death and carnage on our streets!Of course the crime industry employs so many people that disposing of these draconian, anti-constitutional laws is discouraged. Not to mention the fact that this "war on drugs" also gives the government an excuse to infringe on our privacy rights as they encourage crimes of all sorts and pretend to "protect" us.

A few false assumptions in some of the comments on gun control and health care. First of all, one commenter talks as if Obama is going to devise one health care plan for everyone. Actually those who can afford to buy their own plans will continue to have choices as they do now; the reform calls for health care (in most cases subsidized) for the uninsured poor; they will be the ones with limitations as far as options like choice of provider.

And as far as a liberal gun control movement to ban guns: most liberals I know don’t necessarily want to see guns banned, outright. They want better gun control. I’ve done stories on this topic and between the stats I found and feedback from criminals I interviewed, a big part of the problem is that criminals are picking guns up with little to no background checks. It is possible to do a better job keeping guns out of the bad guys’ hands – making them as easy to get as pocket knives is not the way.
