Former delegate, community activist, and some say Reagan look-alike, Ken Holt, made his announcement today of his run for Baltimore County Executive with a media blitz, including print, online, radio and television spots. His website at www.kenholt2010.com was also launched and gives a comprehensive view into not only his political philosophies and ideas, but his personal life.

In the week leading up to the announcement, Mr. Holt participated in two debates with the two Democrat contenders for the county’s top job. The first debate was sponsored by the Perry Hall Improvement Association and the second was hosted by the Greater Chesaco Community Association. Mr. Holt said at both events there was lively debate and frank questioning by the audience. He said, “I don’t talk like a politician. I call it as I see it. I think the straight talk has been appreciated by the audience. I’ve enjoyed the debates immensely.”

Mr. Holt’s primary concerns surround the county’s budget deficit for next year of an estimated $150 million. He says the state deficit will be offloaded onto the counties, so the county will face service cutbacks or the proposition of raising revenue. He said, “My hunch is that after the election, the state will probably impose an increase in taxes in a variety of different areas and then begin to shift the liabilities onto the counties.”

Mr. Holt’s first speaking engagement after today’s announcement will occur this Saturday, at a fundraiser hosted by the Reagan Republican Club (the writer’s home club). It takes place from 2-6pm at Oddfellows Hall, 12210 Long Green Pike in Glen Arm. Information can be found on the website here.

He will then participate in a candidate forum sponsored by the Sparks-Glencoe Community Planning Council on April 22 at 7pm.

The Holt campaign has set a tentative date of May 23 for his first fundraiser and picnic on his farm, which is planned as a “Unity Rally”, free of charge to the public. He said, “It’s important not to put a price tag on a political rally. It’s important to get people together and have them share their ideas. Have it serve as a volunteer base-building for those who want to get involved by posting signs, handing out literature, or going door-to-door. They can listen to candidates and get inspired.”
