When a Target store in Walnut Creek, California requested employees to present their legal documentation in order to keep their jobs, they were surprised to receive resignations instead of proper paperwork.
The Northern California store lost approximately 40 employees overnight and in place of the employees Target was presented with a legal wrangle by La Raza Centro Legal guru, Rocio Avila who is now representing the illegal immigrants.
A spokesperson from Target, Kate Gillen explained the employees had an opportunity to prove their eligibility in order to continue working, however most resigned without incident.
It seems La Raza is questioning Target’s rational behind the move to request legal documents. It’s worth pointing out that it is unlawful for employers and illegal immigrants to enter the workforce without proper identification and work papers.
However, La Raza contends Target is simply targeting illegal workers in an effort continue its practice of racial profiling. Many anti-illegal immigration activists are calling the action by La Raza attorney absurd and believe any court that tries to circumvent the laws of the United States should be held accountable.
Many in the country are happy that large companies like Target are taking the initiative to clear all workers ensuring legal residents have the opportunity to work, especially in California where the unemployment rate hovers around the 12 percent mark.

Illegal immigration is the new slavery. While I agree with Targets's action, the lack of legal recourse for illegal immigrants is used by Unions and groups like La Raza to extort money and abuse these people.
Since the progressives want to use this for political and financial advantage, just as slave owners did, we must take a tough love positiion and motivate these people to resolve their legal status!

Once in Napa, shelf price said $29-I was charged $34 (watch your receipts folks)and once in Cabo San Lucas, bought a case of water and they charged me per bottle, totalling $11.50! Needless to say, I put ot back.

I am only surprised that it took the left the better part of a year before they began to play the race game in earnest. The new left suffers from schizophrenia as it pertains to race. They claim to want to move past race in this country, but are reluctant to do so. Race provides them with a sense of security; they believe that through race they are able to keep their emotional and moral equilibrium. And because the left is emotionally tied to race it is a potent political weapon the use of which power seekers and power keepers will not soon relinquish.
Those who profit by exploiting illegal labor are scared to death of E-Verify because it works so well. They have lined up against the bill, claiming that it should not be used because it is not "fool-proof." No system is fool-proof, but E-Verify has a 96.9 percent accuracy rate.

I worked for an international water well drilling company about 15 years ago and it was my responsibility to certify federal I-9 forms stating that the proper documentation was provided by each employee. Copies of that certification along with supporting documents were kept in the employee's file. Why are not all companies doing the same? The law certainly hasn't changed, its just that enforcement of it has ceased in the last 10 or so years. We just need to enforce the employment laws we have-maybe put some teeth in them, even-and get along with the job of putting people back to work.

As a frequent Hispanic Target shopper and Target credit card holder, I am pleased that Target has the good sense to enforce our employment laws equitably. Too many large companies are spineless in their enforcement of such existing laws that should apply to ALL Americans, due primarily to the past extortive practices by likes of Jesse Jackson and other similar opportunists and "community organizers" who make a very good living, addressing so-called "poor peoples" issues. La Raza is a racist, seditionist organization that advocates "La Reconquista (The Reconquering)of all the lands that the defeated Mexican government legally signed over to the U.S. in 1847.

What A great article. I read it a day or so ago and decided to shop at Target for about half of my Christmas gift list. (which unfortunately I left til now..but that's another story). I bought Digital cameras, i-pods, DVDs, CDs, Books, and Food Items and some ornaments. Clothes I got at Pennys and Catalogues before.

But I also wanted to say I have heard rhetoric from La Raza that they wanted to "Clean" the southwest of Caucasians. And even some that advocated violence by supporting the Zetas in Texas. Good for Target! The USA used to be a Nation of Law. The immigration law is well documented and Target is only complying with the law and should be commended for it, not sued. Too bad more employers don't comply with immigration laws and the hiring of illegal aliens. As mentioned in an earlier comment, this race card crap is truly getting old and out of control costing this nation a ridiculous amount of money in legal expenditures. While I very much appreciate this story, Ms. Dvorak fails in two areas. First, she fails to state whether this is a SYSTEMWIDE policy or just A SINGLE-STORE policy. If it's a SYSTEMWIDE poplicy, then this is a HUGE story. Why? Because every Target Store in the Bay Area, particularly the ones on the Peninsula, employs possible HUNDREDS of illegals. Only a handful of Target's employees speak English. That's one sure test of whether they are legal or illegal. Second, Mr. Dvorak states that the CA unemployment rate is "12%". That is a joke, and I'm sure she knows it. All she has to do is go to WND Archives and look up a November 9, 2009 Red Alert by investigator Jerome Corsi to find that the national unemployement rate is actually 22.1%!
There is no way that California's is less than the national rate!!

I'll definitely shop at Target if they continue this policy nation-wide. It's about time large companies that feast off the American consumer make sure they are employing legal birth right citizens no matter what race, gender or religious belief.

We all know that 95% of the labor work that is needed here in the United States is done by illegal aliens. Now if you are a american citizen then step up to the plate and take over the hard work that is. Claim the job to pick vegetables in field, claims the contruction work others wont do. In the time that I have been here I have not seen or heard a citizen say thanks to a illegal immigrant for doinf a job they well know they wouldnt do. So before anybody says deport all illegal immigrants, think about what kind of service you will need to do when thery are all gone.
ladele - The problem isn't that American workers WON'T do the jobs that illegals do, it's that they aren't willing to do them for less than minimum wage & be paid under the table. Those who hire illegals are just as guilty as the illegals when it comes to robbing Americans of jobs. Let's get real here - Joe Illegal can be paid under the table so his employer pays no taxes on him, & Joe Illegal pays no income tax or any other payroll tax. Does it ever occur to anyone just HOW MUCH tax revenue is lost by many states because of this? Is it any wonder that CA is bankrupt? On top of that, the average cost to taxpayers for subsidizing illegals is roughly $1700 per year per taxpayer in the state of CA alone. It's insanity.
