With the 2010 elections looming, informed voters are looking at candidates in their own backyard much more closely. Recently the San Diego Sheriff’s office caught a lot of flak regarding its decision to place military LRAD crowd control devices at town halls directly endangering American citizens.
Jim Duffy, who is running against current Sheriff Bill Gore, says this is another misuse of taxpayer money. “The Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) was purchased to be used as a public address system.”
However, Duffy contends the Sheriff’s Department purchased the wrong equipment. “The LRAD was not intended for this type of use, it’s a very high-tech piece of equipment the military uses.”
There are much better ways to use money within the Sheriff’s Department. “It’s a chilling effect for town hall attendees to see a use of force. The Sheriff’s Department could have placed a number of cars a safe distance away rather than be so intimidating.”
Duffy also explains that spending $40,000 on a military device is not being a good steward with taxpayer money. “It is for these reasons the Department needs to implement a zero-based budget. This will allow for more accountably with the Sheriff’s office, something the resident’s want.”
Another glaring fact facing the Sheriff’s office is the fact they do not implement the immigration 287g law set up by the federal government to assist with immigration issues.
“This is a no brainer. We are the only major border county that doesn’t use that law enforcement tool,” Duffy said.
The fact illegal immigrants cross our borders and commit numerous crimes and continue to slip through the system should be a red flag to all in law enforcement, Duffy says.
Looking to the federal government, Duffy, who is a 27-year veteran in law enforcement, believes San Diego stands to benefit from a federal task force. “The recent murder of Border Patrol agent Robert Rosas, should be reason enough to look for more ways to curb border violence.”
Illegal immigration issues should be a common thread law enforcement agencies work towards. “This issue affects all agencies at some level and it is our job to enforce all the laws, not pick and choose,” Duffy explains.
Programs like teen explorers and neighborhood watch are very successful when it comes to bringing all communities together. “We need to get back to these types of programs to bring everyone together,” Duffy says.
“By actively including everyone in a community the Sheriff Department can foster good will and solve tough issues people in San Diego face on a daily basis,” he finished.

His use of military weapons against peaceful town hall attendees in San Diego is very disturbing. He should resign immediately or be fired.
He's a proven danger to the public. Call the County Supervisors and demand action. This was their boy, they need to take care of this.
Living on the Border, I have had several occasions to call the Sheriff's Office. Not once did they show up in a timely manner. Usually it was hours later and in several cases, days later. On one occasion, after being on the line with the Dispatcher who was asking "Exactly where are You Located?", What is the nearest Cross Street?" and after giving Her the cross street where The Sheriff's Sub Station is located, She still wanted more directions. I finally told Her to skip it, I would handle the situation my self. She proceeded to tell Me what I could or could not do and I replyed the same to Her and hung up. I often wondered whose Pay Roll the Sheriff's are on.
Personally, I am for Sheriff Jay to compliment Sheriff Joe in our neighboring State.

All you disgruntled voters out there!! I HOPE you remember that it was the Board of Supervisors who 'dumped' this disgrace on us! I don't know who (if any) are up for re-election next year, but WHENEVER any of them come up, VOTE THEM OUT!! CLEAN SWEEP! They REEK of corruption and lack of caring for the voters! I plan to work HARD to defeat my Supervisor, Bill Horn, for his roll in giving us Bill Gore AND the lack of road repair where I live.

Duffy? Too bad he is so liberal; even he himself calls himself to the left of Gore. Just what we need. Not to mention the guy, along with Gore, paid to participate in the gay pride parade this summer in Hillcrest, in a green & white no less. I am sure his father rolled over in his grave. These thugs in the SO's office are out of control. I asked a Judge to protect me from the abuse and harassment of these thugs and the judge fined $1,000.00 bucks. San Diego is in real trouble. Bill Gore you are fired you just don't know it yet

I was at the El Cajon tax party and lo and behold there sat 4 men running for sheriff. #1 Bruce Ruff said that illegal imigration was a federal problem and the sheriff's dept. is too busy to get involved. #2 Jay laSeure believes the sheriff should get involved, and his answers were incredable. #3 Bill Gory..he was heckled about his roll in taking the Lrad sonic sound machine to 2 town hall meetings and said none of his officers were trained to (con't)
officers were trained in using the machne and anyone who believes the sheriff's dept spent $80,000 for 2 sonic death machines being used in Iraq were bought as loud speakers is a fool. And yes, he is the agent at Ruby Ridge that gave the order "shoot to kill." Duffy also tried to pretend he didn't know the Lrad was a killing machine. Jay LeSuer is my choice for sheriff.
