Migrant camps in San Diego are teeming with prostitution

Over the weekend the San Diego Minutemen stumbled upon some extra curricular activities in McGonigle Canyon in the city of San Diego -illegal prostitution.

A couple of Minutemen activists, who often scout the local canyons for illegal migrant and squatter camps and their associated crimes and fire hazards, observed an unusually high number of well-dressed Latino men and boys traversing the field into an old grove of eucalyptus trees.

After 45-minutes of observation, the pair were joined by a freelance photojournalist and decided to get a closer look at the scene because the canyon has a history of prostitution in a nearby location aptly named the “rape grove.”

Once they reached the tree grove, approximately eight men and two girls scattered into all directions, according to Jeff Schwilk, founder of SDMM.

What they found inside the trees were two makeshift “sex dens” complete with used and unused multi-colored condoms, lubricant, women’s clothing and shoes and a rough-shod bed. A man suspected of being a pimp or a “John” and a suspected prostitute were apprehended by the San Diego Police Department.

Schwilk pointed out the well-used foot paths as the signs that led his group to suspect something fishy was taking place. “We noted the paths through the brush leading into the prostitution area were very well worn and the ‘lounge’ area was cleared of brush,” Schwilk explained.

“It appears that prostitution has been going on in this area regularly for many months,” he said.

Schwilk referred to this problem as San Diego’s ‘dirty little secret,’ and notes his frustration with local law enforcement not doing enough to keep the canyon clear of dozens of migrant camps which provide many of the clients for the field prostitution ring. “Three years ago SDMM exposed the daytime prostitution ring in the old rape grove, but many migrant camps have remained.”

Local illegal immigration activist, Enrique Monrones, still visits the migrant camps in the canyon a couple of Saturdays a month, according to emails he sends out to his group. “He claims to be delivering food and water to the illegal squatters,” Schwilk said.

A local resident said he was shocked about the crimes taking place below his housing development. “I don’t like it,” he said as he walked the popular canyon with his toddler. “I guess they (police) should take care of that problem.”

The apprehended perpetrators are suspected of being illegal aliens, although the female claimed she had been in the country illegally for 17 years. According to conversations with the suspected prostitute, who wouldn’t share her name at the scene, she was worried that this may hurt her chances of becoming a legal resident some day.

SDMM reported the crimes immediately to the San Diego Police Department, who arrived near the scene, but failed to investigate the prostitution site and continue to interview all who were involved.

The San Diego Police Department has not confirmed whether the apprehensions culminated in arrests yet.

After visiting the scene the next day, police had not cleared the area of used condoms and trash, leaving one to wonder what kind of diseases could be contracted by passersby and whether the police even bothered to collect any evidence of the prostitution the citizens walked in on.

It seems nowadays that police aren't interested in doing their jobs, like going after illegal aliens and the crimes they commit. I guess if its not revenue-driven, like writing tickets or harassing legal citizens, then it just doesn't matter what laws the illegals break.

Its unbelievable that not only do the minutemen have to patrol the border but we are now patrolling local area because the local PD is NOT doing their job......

    Great work SDMM

Gotta respect those SDMM! If only our own law enforcement agencies and the federal government respected us enough to be more proactive regarding the ongoing invasion of our sovereign nation! HINT: The nation includes CA, just in case there is a misunderstanding.
...and this is happening adjacent to communities where folks are attempting to raise families...Frightening, isn't it?

This is too rich... Almost good enough for John Stewart's The Daily Show:
"According to conversations with the suspected prostitute, who wouldn’t share her name at the scene, she was worried that this may hurt her chances of becoming a legal resident some day."

Duh.... This should get her deported PDQ after doing her time for prostitution... Otherwise, we're sending a clear message about the moral and occupational quality of persons we want to receive in our country.

The city of San Diego is now like LA, an illegal alien sanctuary city where law breakers are protected and citizens ignored. Mexico runs that place now. Get used to it. The cops have.

I don't believe that Kimberly. Migrant camps teeming with prostitution? No, can't be. Ex El Presidente Jorge Bush said that people with "family values" are coming here to work. He didn't specify what kind of work though, so maybe he was right.

Jimi, Mexico runs California now, for all practical purposes. How can it be otherwise when we have--drug dealers growing pot in California's national forests, illegal aliens and a Mayor dedicated to their "rights" in Los Angeles, Mexican Mafia running rampant in cities across California, and protected in Sanctuary Cities, politicians like a Mexican politician in San Francisco Mr.Campos, who has just strengthened the laws against deporting gang members even though three members of a long time Frisco family were ruthlessly murdered by a gang member, every city in California is a Santuary city,(everyone is, whether they officially say so or not),and illegal aliens have more rights than citizens. Think not, the cops dare not even hassle them for driving illegally, being drunk, or most other things they do. There's nothing special about San Diego, that isn't true of California in general. Press Two for more information, to qualify for an illegal alien sub-prime mortgage.

Police and other politicians will never "do their jobs" as so many folks on this forum complain, because it's easier for government workers,(that's what police are) to drink coffee and hang out at the donut shop. The only thing that motivates them is when citizens complain, unrelentingly, and light fires under their lazy and apathetic asses by bitching, so to speak.

Funny - if I want to ride a mountain bike in Del Mar Mesa there are all kinds of signs telling me I shouldn't do it because of damage to the environment. But I guess trash and used condoms from illegals are OK for the environment.

It seems this is completely taken out of context. Educate yourself on what lies beneath instead of being fed garbage lies.
Did you ever stop to think this "prostitute" as you view her most likely is a victim of Human Trafficking. Yes, human trafficking is alive and here in the United States, and guess what... Us as Americans fuel it by making the assumption that illegal immigrants are the reason it exists. Wrong! Please remember we are all immigrants every single one of us, the Minute Men did nothing more then twist what is human trafficking they should also educate themselves! Canyons are known for being the #1 place where human trafficking takes place in which many of these "prostitutes" are forced and or coerced into this situation. I am an American woman, lucky and proud to be one, but if American means hypocrite then I rather just state I am of European decent and also an Immigrant.

Last time I checked, there were Legal American (Non-Illegal) Anglo drug dealers, there are bad people in the United States, every race including white, mexican, black, Every kind. Lets not pretend these illegals are to blame for every single thing. Maybe if you would stop pointing fingers you would all make better use of your time. Police and our government are doing an excellent job, and if you do not see that then maybe you should not be American at all!! Go back from where YOU CAME FROM!! maybe you will like it better over there!!!!!!!!!!

To Bill, your'e showing your ignorance. The point of this article is NOT about AMERICAN MEN. NO SIR/MAAM. Don't worry about us AMERICAN MEN. We get busted for looking at the cops wrong, while illegal aliens get away with living in a parallel society. The reason I detest your relativist view point is, because it is the lack of respect for the American citizenry that is bringing this nation to its knees. I'm sick of hearing critics of Americans, while foreign nationals in the country illeally, literally get away with murder, forget about condoms.

"...police had not cleared the area of used condoms and trash, leaving one to wonder what kind of diseases could be contracted by passersby and whether the police even bothered to collect any evidence of the prostitution the citizens walked in on." 1. Police are not garbage men, did any of you take the responsibility to clean it up? 2. Hard to contract any disease from walking near a used or new condom. 3. Sounds like the whole article has a lot of if's and assumptions. I hope there is a follow up article once the police, who did their job by apprehending the alleged criminals, report on this case. I am not in favor of giving my tax money over so that illegals can receive services they don't pay for but I also believe everyone has a right to a fair trial so lets not hang em high just yet.

First, the racism and xenophobia of the Minute Men and many of the posters here is lamentable. The migrants are in those camps because we demand low cost laborers to pick our produce, do our construction, cook our food, clean our houses, etc. If we didn't want a workforce that was so easy to exploit because of their fear of being deported, those people wouldn't be in the canyons.

Second, prostitution, as far as I've seen, is an activity that doesn't just happen in the canyons and isn't limited to Latinos, migrants or aliens. It happens in 5-star hotels, private homes, and just about everywhere else. It involves the poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich.

Third, from my personal knowledge, I can tell you that the San Diego Mountain Biking Association (www.sdmba.com) has offered to send members of their National Mountain Bike Patrol unit to patrol the area, but the parks & rec department was more concerned about keeping mountain bikers out and creating their own patrol.

How about the welfare and prison force doing a little work for a change... get some of them (everyone knows the abuses to the system that occur) to do our menial labor, wash our underwear as Marisa B Ugarte has so pleasantly pointed out. It's about time America workers/taxpayers get something back for providing these two classes of Americans with there lifestyle, you know not working but somehow making a living... I can commit a crime sit on my butt, get an education get feed and not work or I can have a career on welfare, buy beer, drugs and get my housing, food & medical all on someone elses dime... Get for real people, stand up for justice... the american way... help those who help themselves... teach a man to fish?

Wow, what shoddy reporting filled with racist overtones and biased conjecture. Ever thought about fiction? Yellow journalism at its best. What is even more lamentable is that the story uses SDMM as a source, when Schwilk and his associates (read: racists friends) have been found guilty of slander and defamation of character. How can I take you, Kimberly, as a serious reporter?

  • Chris 2 years ago

and why would you even include Enrique Morones without attributing a quote to him? Did you bother contacting him? I don't like the guy's methods, but it seems any decent reporter would want to give someone a chance to speak on his own behalf, not depend on an email that Schwilk gets from him. I suppose you're interested in the ratings to include both Morones and Schwilk in an article.

...that the phrase "apprehended perpetrators" is used in relation to the SDMM detaining people there. Last I checked, unless you are law enforcement, which SDMM is not, it is unlawful to detain someone even under the premise of a citizen's arrest. This begs the question, did the SDMM fellows illegally detain someone in their zeal to "catch" someone in the act? Their video shows no prostitution or otherwise unlawful activity taking place.
