The 2009 political winds gave Democrats a substantial majority in the House and a filibuster -proof Senate, yet a year of inter-party bickering left the President empty handed when it came to health care legislation, cap-and-trade and immigration reform.

"People are angry and disillusioned," Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill) said in a recent interview.

Gutierrez criticized the Obama administration for not trying harder for legislation that would grant amnesty for most immigrants. The Illinois Congressman and author of 2010 comprehensive immigration reform legislation conceded that he short at least 18 votes in the House and therefore unable to move the bill he sponsored.

Gutierrez made a trip this week to Los Angeles to discuss amnesty and to headline a town hall meeting at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church, known as "La Placita," which has acknowledged its sanctuary standing for illegal immigrants.

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Gutierrez said that Obama's failure to push immigration reform was symbolized by his State of the Union address last Wednesday, “when he devoted 38 of about 7,300 words to the issue.”

“The throwaway line," Gutierrez said, was the final straw for many activists. Many hard-line immigration activists have been perturbed by the Obama Administrations continued deportations and enforcement actions that haven’t led to any real progress on reform.

It’s been reported by government data that President Obama has continued the removals of illegal immigrants. In 2009, deportations grew to 387,790 from 291,060 in 2007 under the Bush administration.

In a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, spokesman Matt Chandler said the administration remained "committed to confronting this problem" by using administrative and enforcement tools as well as work with Congress to find more solutions.

Gutierrez’ inability to consolidate fellow Democrats to pass meaningful reform and offer amnesty to most of the nation's 12-20 million illegal immigrants, issue more family visas, increase worker protections doesn’t sit well with impatient immigration groups.

“Get ready to be bombarded with all the scary and racist, hate -filled arguments on why this country should not pass comprehensive immigration reform and why we should give mass deportations, or ‘attrition through enforcement’ a chance,” according to immigration activist Tony Herrera. “Then get ready for massive celebration from the 12 million undocumented immigrants who will embrace their new-found American citizenship, they’ll move on and quickly and quietly assimilate into our fabric of society, some have already begun such assimilation, but those anti-immigrant groups will remain, small in numbers, but increasingly vocal, persistent in their attempt to drive a wedge and stifle a cohesive and multi-cultural America.”

The cynical sniping continues from Gutierrez on his website regarding the immigration battle expected to heat up later this year. “In the immigration debate, some things are constant. They never change. One is that opponents of immigration reform will use it as a wedge issue and will blame everything from unemployment to rising health care costs on immigrants. Your favorite lost on Dancing with the Stars? Let’s blame immigrants for that one, too.”

Terse rhetoric will not encourage those on the fence to support immigration activists especially in a tough economy and double-digit unemployment.

“Skeptical politicians believe it drives poll numbers, cynical commentators believe it drives TV ratings. The immigrant blame game is one of the most predictable and most deplorable, elements of public debate in our nation,” according to Gutierrez.

“In Congress, we’ve responded year after year with legislation, often bipartisan,” Gutierrez explains. While many immigrant opponents would never even come to the table to craft a workable solution to the urgent crisis, immigration activists sit patiently at that table, often making concessions after concessions and going home with nothing.

But it’s precisely the illegal immigrant activists’ tactics that many Americans find hard to understand. For example many illegals play “the keeping the family together card.” Gutierrez says he is interested in “The ability of a mother to stay with her son or an honest person to find work and for all families in the country to be safe-three simple principles. Three American principles. Not just for immigrants, but for all of us. Every American will benefit from this bill, from the heightened national security, from the commitment to family unity, from the common-sense approach to jobs and our economy,” the Congressman finished.

However, Americans concerned with illegals that entered the country illegally and play the family card, explain that nobody is keeping families apart. “Illegal immigrants can go back to their home country and reunite with their families. Nobody is forcing parents to leave their kids behind, it’s a big misnomer,” say anti-illegal immigration activists.

As a candidate for President, Obama said, “We need immigration reform that will secure our borders, and punish employers who exploit immigrant labor; reform that finally brings the 12 million people who are here illegally out of the shadows by requiring them to take steps to become legal citizens. We must assert our values and reconcile our principles as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. That is a priority I will pursue from my very first day.”

However, fast forward a year and in the President’s first State of the Union speech in which he spoke vaguely about immigration, “We should continue to work at fixing our broken immigration system to secure our borders and enforce our laws and ensure that everyone who plays by rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation.”

Not exactly what immigration reform activists were looking for from President Obama.

NumbersUSA, an organization committed to legal immigration said, “If the President really believed that putting Americans back to work was an emergency that called for tough measures, he would have announced a suspension of most new immigration of foreign workers and mandated E-Verify verification to keep illegal aliens from U.S. jobs.”

It sounds like the American voters have persuaded the White House that "comprehensive immigration reform" is far more controversial than the other items the President mentioned directly in his yearly address, according to Roy Beck of NumbersUSA.

“And for that, we can thank the millions of Americans who have contacted the White House in the last year to express their opposition to ‘comprehensive immigration reform,’" Beck finished.

Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX) addressed the issue of American jobs being held by illegal immigrants this way; “We could cut the unemployment rate in half simply by enforcing immigration laws. Unfortunately, the Obama administration continues to ignore the eight million illegal immigrants holding jobs that rightfully belong to out-of-work citizens and legal immigrants.”

In an effort to have their voices heard immigrant rights supporters are organizing a national mobilization demonstration on March 21 of this year and hope to have at least 100,000 immigrants ready to march in Washington D.C.

Without immigration progress, Congressman Gutierrez warned that many Latinos would stay home from the voting booths this year and for the 2012 presidential election if D.C. fails to produce immigration reform and grant amnesty.

“We need to hold all of our political leaders accountable,” he said.

If the tea party events held across America the past year are any indication as to how the American people feel about immigration reform and amnesty, Washington politicians will face the wrath from voters on both sides of the issue.

I thought this country was "post racial." So what's with Latinos pushing for amnesty for people they don't even know and just because they are Latino? How stupid can you get to push for amnesty for millions of people you don't even know but rah rah for because they are brown? Or because they might speak Spanish? Evidently what the good Senator is saying is that Latinos aren't very smart and can be led by the nose to create mass approval to give citizenship to anybody who speaks their language? Aren't we at least going to act as if we care who we grant citizenship to? How about the gangs? How about the child molesters? How about people with rap (not the song) sheets as long as your arm. Are these people really so gullible? I'm white and if I was being asked to support 12-20 million white criminals being rewarded with citizenship without any other knowledge of who that person(s) really are of course I would say NO NO NO NO. But then I'm not trying to "brown up" America.

Didn't you know Maggie? Those who come here illegally, come with their hands open saying gimme gimme gimme. Once they get here, they want rights, work, and almost a free home and car. They don't want to assimilate, they want to live like they are in Messico, looked at neighborhoods that are predominantly Latino, they look like slums. They have broken the law, and do not deserve this country's most coveted prize. If I snuck into another country illegally, should I demand citizenship?

Immigration Reform is not only about granting amnesty to many. It is also about changing a seriously flawed system that punishes families. Many of us are married to American citizens and have American born children. Many of us own businesses and employ American citizens, pay taxes, volunteer, responsibly pay our mortgages even though we are under the water with it, we assimilate, learn the language, customs and culture. We work hard and provide to our families and communities. All we ask is for a chance. A chance to make this a beter country for our children. The current laws do not distinguish the good from the bad. Is a bucket system

These latinos, hispanics or whatever they want to call themselves better get a real grip, and real soon. Because their marxist/socialist/leftist/narco scheme to overrun our country with their filth and detritus will soon unleash a retaliation and resentment towards them which none of them have seen since the last time these grifters were thrown out of our country en masse. These criminals only know and accept criminal behavior, and the strong consumes the weak where they slink in here from. This fool Gutierrez will be one of the first to go, and so it goes with the rest of these parasites, and they soon shall see how much "power" they have and what it will get them come November. If they were so powerful, then they wouldn't be so frustrated and left out in the cold right now. More "proud latino proud hispanic" bluster, which will go poof just as did their big rallies back here a few years ago. Where did that get them, other than closer to the exits.

Anyone who comes over illegally is only taking a job away and causing a business competor either take part in hiring an illegal or down size their employees just to stay in business. I can't see why granting amnesty to those who broke the law should be even given the rights to protest.

How many of us know, that the controversial border fence is by law supposed to be--TWO SEPARATE--FENCES? Senator Obama voted for it. more than three years ago, but only 35 miles of double-layered fencing is in place and much of the remaining 360 miles of the border fencing is badly constructed--without real barriers. The Truth is the government is lying to us.

The Secure Fence Act of 2006 (Pub.L. 109-367) was enacted October 26, 2006 in the United States. The act allows for over 700 miles (1,100 km) of double-reinforced fence to be built along the border with Mexico across cities and deserts alike, in the U.S. states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas in areas that have experienced illegal drug trafficking, human slavery, gun peddling, illegal immigration and the threat of terrorism. U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez and Tony Herrera are bad snake oil vendors. They want President Obama and the rest of us to think that if amnesty for illegals is passed, there will be a stampede by illegals to become U.S. citizens! Anybody who believes that, please contact me. I have a nice bridge I am trying to sell for years.
Illegal aliens come here for better wages and to enjoy the social services that U.S. taxpayers provide. They hope to make enough money someday to be financially comfortable when they go back to their country. They love their native land and they have no desire to become U.S. citizens. The proof is that they don't try to learn English and assimilate in American society.
I am fluent in Spanish and I have asked several illegals if they want to be U.S. citizens. The answer is: "What for? I can go to my country any time I want and I have here everything I need. Too much trouble to become a U.S. citizen."

Congress has turned this into a very ugly mess as they refused to honor their oath of office and enforce the law. The consequences will be that the illegal aliens will cost a huge amount of money to deport, but a far, far greater amount if we allow them to remain.

And while they say they are going home, some are, ... most are not I think. But clearly.. clearly.. the cost of the amnesty for the illegal aliens to the taxpayer is absolutely not acceptable. They must be deported and the sooner they do that, the sooner we can embark on some sort of healing process.

As a person that immigrated legally to the country with my family, I experienced first hand the extremely difficult, and almost impossible process that was obtaining all the necessary paperwork. Might I add, this process took almost half of my life. Until we reform the process of legally coming to this country, people will continue to do so illegally. As evidenced by the recent bribes for the health votes and many other immoral acts by legislators of both parties, the moral fiber of America is in a deep decline. We need desperately to reverse that trend. Turning a blind eye to the travesty of the flood of illegal aliens that continue to enter America unacceptable. This is a legal issue, not a moral issue. We must return to being a nation of law abiding people. It is incumbent upon our elected officials to d our sworn duty to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the land.

I am a permanent resident who came to this country legally many, many years ago. The immigration law is horrible in this, so called, "country of immigrants". I spent almost $10000 for the whole process and waited few years to actually get the card. This is the reason why people either come to this country illegally or become illegal because some of the visas do not allow them to work, while their husbands or wives are working. Do you people think that young man will seat at home and live on his wife's salary? Maybe American man would do that, but I doubt it. If you don't reform the immigration law the problem will get worse. Yes, the illegal immigration is wrong and should be stopped, but the only way to do that is to change the law that forces people to come here illegally or become illegal. The borders needs to be strengthen too. The people who are already here for years should be legalized. Separating families is just wrong. Aren't you Christians? Would Jesus behave like devil?

We need to reform the immigration law and the sooner we do that the better. Illegal immigration should not continue, but in order to stop it we need to change the law. I am surprised that people in this country can't see that. It is our fault that we let the problem continue for years. When economy was good we used those poor people to do the most horrible jobs while paying them almost nothing. Now, when economy is bad we blame immigrants for everything. How is really evil here? We have to wake up and give those people papers, so they can contribute to economy. They are not going anywhere. They have families here, have been living here for years, so I think that it is immoral and unethical to chase the throughout this country. People whose wives or husbands are citizens or have green cards should be legalized first, we can't separate families!!!! Then the rest of the people who have no criminal record. Spain had amnesty in 2005, because they are smart and realistic, unlike us...

Illegal Aliens knew when they came here that they were illegally entering our country. If they chose that and had babies, on our dime, then the entire family needs to go back to where ever they came from. If they want to leave their baby then that is fine, there are plenty of homes. They broke our laws, what is so hard to understand. Many are using Americans Social Security numbers. I would be thrown in Federal jail for that. Illegals are fully aware of the consequenses of tresspasing our border and coming in illegaly. There are much poorer countries than Mexico. Why don't we let everyone in from all the countries without papers. These people have not been criminal checked or health checked. Think of the diseases they could bring in. NO, I am not for any sort of Amnesty for law breakers. Sorry, but I have to go to the doctor but my insurance does not cover what i need. If I said I was an Illegal Alien, I would get full health care benefits. I've seen this with my own eyes.
