As the recession drags on and jobs continue to be shed at an alarming rate, a number of Gallup and Rasmussen polls find Americans want immigration to slow.
While the President is in Mexico to warm relations south of the border and Latino activist groups trying to up the ante with amnesty, Gallup finds more than 50 percent of all Americans are less favorable to immigration. This number is up sharply from the 39 percent number a year ago.
While the voters’ stance on immigration has receded and gained momentum since 9/11, current figures put the immigration issue in a downturn. Current polling data shows most citizens are more focused on the economic growth, health care reform and job creation.
Still the Obama Administration continues to lessen its regulations with E-Verify, 287(g) prosecution of those here illegally and relax the community and business raids targeting illegal aliens.
Even though immigration is not at the forefront throughout the country it’s worth noting states that share a border with Mexico have not given up to tougher law enforcement issues.
Two weeks ago, Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas was execution along the California border near Campo. It is widely assumed by law enforcement officials that the assailants skipped back through a porous fence into Mexico.
The added attention doesn’t play well with many in California. According to Rasmussen polling data, 65 percent of Californians believe the availability of government money and social services draw illegal aliens to the state.
When the idea of immigration reform percolated a couple of months ago, Obama and like-minded legislators came up against strong opposition from the voters. It does not help that provisions within the health care reform bill included benefits for those here illegally as well as their family members.
Currently, 66 percent of voters polled by Rasmussen, state that it is extremely important for the government to improve the border fence and curb incentives for those to come to America in order for meaningful immigration reform talks to take place.
Most Americans favor some sort of reform when it comes to illegal immigration, but with that comes the responsibility to enforce the current laws on the books and clamping down on U.S./Mexico borders.
According to Fox News, one in 10 Mexican citizens now resides in the U.S. They also state that in the last 18 months more than 10,000 Mexicans have been murdered. This number dwarfs the number of U.S. soldiers who have died in the Iraq/Afghanistan wars combined.
These numbers only add to American’s skittishness about opening up the flood gates.
One final point comes from the real cost of amnesty. The Heritage Foundation has estimated amnesty would cost the taxpayer more than $2.6 trillion.
Until American laws are enforced, it remains clear the American people do not want any form of Amnesty.

The American people aren’t idiots. Most know and believe that immigration is an important part of what we’re about, but there comes a point when we have to take a look at what we’re doing. If you can’t control your borders (which it seems we can’t) the whole immigration system falls apart. Even those who use the system in a legal way are disillusioned because they wonder why they had to go through a legal process when others don’t.
Those illegal workers confronted by a upgraded application in the workplace, will soon shy away from any contact with employers who stipulate the use of E-Verification. Inferior enforcement for years of neglect and inefficiency whether intentional or not by previous administration, are to blame for the incessant illegal immigration that has clogged the American labors work environment. E-Verify must be in-perpetuity, not voluntary, for everybody throughout the United States. Not employees who have just been hired, but everybody who is on the payroll. There should be a large formidable force of interior ICE inspectors who make lightening strikes on large and small business. The penalty for hiring illegal aliens should be extremely severe, as they are stealing jobs from Americans and legal residents. Confiscation of assets, heavy fines and certainly prison sentences. Without these pre-requisites, E-Verify will not be efficient enough. What this poll is proving is, the issue is about Immigration, regardless of legal or illegal, and as you said, it is totally about Immigration from Latin countries.
This is racism at its rawest.
The Gallup Poll shows the anti Immigration numbers are the severest in the South.
The reality is, this issue is not about Immigration at all. In reality, the issue is about our country's demographic changes from White Northern European majority to a majority minority nation by 2030. The truth is, our country is changing multi ethnically and multi culturally and the racists and white nationalists in this country cannot stand it. That is what this poll is all about.
Additionally Ms. Dvorak, no one from south of the border murdered Border Patrol Agent Rosas. The truth is, the FBI has upped its reward to find out exactly who did commit these murders. It may have been a Minutmean, as in the Brisenia Flores (9 yrs old) murder by Shawna Forded and Gunny Bush.
Dee Your comment about those Americans who want decreased immigration are therefore racist--either you're an idiot or you think for some reason Hispanics should enjoy a life in the US paid for by the hard work of American labor/taxpayers--free hospital care, free health care and RX'S, free education, food stamps, etc. for illegals. The politicians have created a massive new welfare programs for illegals so that they will ensure
getting the anchor baby votes when they turn 18. Politicians steal our money and then give it and our jobs to illegals to get their votes down the road. Nice system, huh? Racism is the card always played when someone

I for one, am sick and tired of these ILLEGAL ALIENS snubbing their nose at our immigration laws and the many other laws of this Country. If our Federal Government can not ENFORCE our immigration laws, and get these ILLEGAL ALIENS out of this Country, then let the States do it! One way or another, an end has to come to this illegal immigration, and not with AMNESTY! Amnesty will only encourage more ILLEGAL ALIENS to invade our Country and reward those who broke our laws and raped the American taxpayer in many ways...depressing our wages, taking our jobs, overwhelming our schools with their ILLEGAL ALIEN children, driving without a license or car insurance, all the crime from stolen identities to rape, drugs and everything else.

My brother died in Campo, California, Agent Rosas. He gave his life for our protection. Obama needs to protect our agents and officers with more resources and stricter laws penalizing illegal immigrants for their crimal actions. Our fences are weak, agents do not have adequate lighting in rural areas not enought sensors or agents to go around. My brother was alone when he got shot. This tells me the government needs to have two agents at all times, even if it means spending more money to protect the lives of our agents and our saftey as well.
